The Russian Defense Ministry announced on January 2 that it had deployed a new counter-battery radar system called Yastreb-AV in Ukraine. This system is designed to detect and track enemy artillery and rockets and transmit information to its own artillery systems for attack, according to Newsweek magazine.

The Kremlin announced that the new radar system increases the effectiveness of artillery fire and survivability on the battlefield.

RIA Novosti news agency reported that this is Russia's most modern radar system with a phased array antenna to scout enemy artillery positions.

However, just hours later, Ukrainian special forces said they had hit a Yastreb-AV system at a location in the south of the country with a rocket launched from the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).

The Ukrainian military posted a video on social media showing drone footage of the Russian system on the battlefield before it was destroyed. After the explosion, a person runs away from the scene as the radar emits smoke.

The radar system is believed to have been in the field for only a few hours.

"It's HIMARS time! A perfect shot destroyed a Russian 1K148 Yastreb-AV counter-battery radar system worth about $250 million," the Ukrainian military wrote.

Counter-battery radar systems are said to be an important tool for Ukraine and Russia in the conflict, helping the sides detect incoming targets and quickly track the launch point to return fire.
