Australia and Indonesia already have close cooperation in many areas such as security, people and drug trafficking. The signing of this defense agreement is aimed at further strengthening the strategic trust between the two neighbors, especially when they share the world's longest maritime border.
Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles stressed that from now on, Australia and Indonesia’s shared relationship will be defined by this deep strategic trust. In addition, the agreement also reflects Australia’s commitment to maintaining regional stability, especially in the context of other defence agreements such as AUKUS.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto affirmed that Indonesia will maintain its non-alignment policy and maintain good relations with all parties. He said the agreement will not affect Indonesia's commitment to maintaining balance in international relations.
