U16 Vietnam took the initiative to attack right after the opening whistle. Although they were rated much higher, it was not until the 17th minute that coach Tran Minh Chien's team scored the opening goal.
That was a well-coordinated situation by U16 Vietnam that left the U16 Brunei defense "frozen". Viet Long was the one who scored the goal for U16 Vietnam.
In the 22nd minute, Viet Long raised the score to 2-0, completing his own double. After 2 easy goals, U16 Vietnam pressed the field completely, the ball almost only rolled on U16 Brunei's field.
In the 34th minute, Dau Hong Phong scored a beautiful shot from outside the penalty area, bringing the third goal for U16 Vietnam. Four minutes later, Thai Hieu shot the ball low, making it impossible for the opposing goalkeeper to block.
In the 40th minute, Thanh Thinh shot from a distance, forcing the U16 Brunei goalkeeper to push the ball away. Viet Long immediately rushed in to score, raising the score to 5-0, completing his own hat-trick in the first half.
In the 44th minute, Gia Bao dribbled the ball and was fouled in the penalty area, the referee blew the whistle for a penalty for U16 Vietnam. On the 11m mark, Gia Bao did not miss the opportunity to put U16 Vietnam ahead 6-0.
Disrupted, U15 Brunei continuously conceded goals in the second half. In the 50th minute, Cao Cuong skillfully handled the ball in the U16 Brunei penalty area before pushing it out for Hong Phong to run up from the second line. The precise shot brought the 7th goal for U16 Vietnam.
In the 52nd minute, from a high pass from his teammate on the left wing, Van Bach comfortably headed the ball into the net of U16 Brunei for the 8th time. In the following minutes, Thien Phu, Thanh Binh, and Hong Quang raised the score to 11-0 for U16 Vietnam.
Before the match ended, Thai Hieu, Thanh Binh and Nguyen Luc scored 4 more goals (of which Thanh Binh scored 2 goals to complete the hat-trick), sealing a 15-0 victory for U16 Vietnam.
The 2024 Southeast Asian U16 Championship will feature 12 teams, divided into three groups of four teams each. The teams will compete in a round-robin format to determine the rankings in each group.
The top three teams in each group, along with the best second-placed team, will advance to the semi-finals. Each group will only have one team, so the race for the top spot promises to be fierce and exciting.
According to the draw results, Group A includes host U16 Indonesia, U16 Laos, U16 Philippines and U16 Singapore. Group B includes U16 Vietnam, U16 Myanmar, U16 Brunei and U16 Cambodia. Group C includes U16 Thailand, U16 Australia, U16 Malaysia and U16 Timor Leste.
According to the match schedule, after the opening match with a big win over U16 Brunei, coach Tran Minh Chien and his team will meet U16 Cambodia on June 25 before playing the "group final" match with U16 Myanmar on June 28.
