ESPN published an article evaluating the teams eliminated from the 2023 Asian Cup. In it, author Gabriel Tan said that the elimination of the Vietnamese team was an unfortunate result.
" They showed quality in unfortunate defeats to Japan and Iraq. In the 0-1 loss to Indonesia, they also felt they could have done better ," the journalist wrote.
ESPN's journalist assessed that the Vietnam team can be proud of bringing a young squad to the 2023 Asian Cup.
Players like Vo Minh Trong, Khuat Van Khang, Nguyen Dinh Bac, Nguyen Thai Son have somewhat affirmed their talent and confidence in their first experience at Asia's number 1 playground.
Among them, Dinh Bac - who is in the top 10 youngest players of the tournament - scored against the Japanese team.
" After reaching the quarter-finals of the 2019 Asian Cup, it would be easy to judge the Vietnamese team as regressing after all three losses. But in reality, they are a team in transition as coach Philippe Troussier becomes the successor to Park Hang Seo. They can be proud to be one of the youngest teams in the tournament, with an average age of 24 ," wrote author Gabriel Tan on ESPN.
ESPN said the Vietnamese team was unlucky when facing the Japanese team.
Another Southeast Asian representative, Malaysia, also received positive reviews from ESPN. Coach Kim Pan-gon's team unfortunately lost to Bahrain in extra time, thereby being eliminated. In the match against South Korea, Malaysia played well, holding their opponents to a 3-3 draw.
The Hong Kong team (China) received the most praise. This team participated in the Asian Cup for the first time in 56 years. Their elimination was predicted, but the students of coach Jorn Andersen had excellent performances against Iran and UAE.
The most criticized team is the Chinese team. They were in a not-so-difficult group with Qatar, Lebanon, and Tajikistan but were still eliminated.
" For the first time, the Chinese team failed to score a single goal. They are one of two teams (along with India) with such an undesirable record ," wrote author Gabriel Tan.
