"He doesn't even dare to face failure. He stands in the middle to take pictures with the athletes when they win but disappears when they lose, leaving his students alone.
How is such a person qualified to be the head coach of the women's team?", an angry Chinese fan criticized coach Ma Lin after the Chinese table tennis team suffered a shocking loss to Japan in the final match of the women's team event at the 2024 Asian Table Tennis Championship, which took place in the early morning of October 10 (Vietnam time).
Despite possessing a strong squad with names in the world's top 10 such as Sun Yingsha (ranked 1st), Wang Yidi (ranked 4th) and Chen Xingtong (ranked 6th), the Chinese women's team lost to Japanese players Miwa Harimoto (ranked 7th), Mima Ito (ranked 9th) and Miu Hirano (ranked 12th) with a final score of 1-3.
Notably, 16-year-old Japanese tennis player Miwa Harimoto excellently defeated both Wang Yidi and Sun Yingsha to contribute greatly to the home team's victory.
This is the first time the Chinese team has lost the women's team table tennis championship to another country in 19 years, since 2005. Meanwhile, this is the first victory for the Japanese team over China in the women's team event in 50 years.
More importantly, at the women's team awards ceremony, coach Ma Lin, in charge of the Chinese women's team, did not attend and caused many reactions from fans because of this action.
"There was no preparation, no strategy and no concern for the psychology of the players in the important final match. He could not choose the right time for a time-out (pause the match for 1 minute to discuss techniques), he even let the players solve their own problems during the time-out," a Chinese fan criticized coach Ma Lin.
Other comments suggested that China's coaching staff had tormented world number one Sun Yingsha, forcing the 23-year-old to play in almost every tournament in the past few months while others were allowed to rest.
Olympic champion Chen Meng did not compete in Kazakhstan, while women's team gold medallist Wang Manyu also withdrew at the last minute, leaving Sun Yingsha to shoulder the burden alongside Wang Yidi and Chen Xingtong.
"Players competing in the Paris Olympics are all allowed to choose their own rest periods, but Sun Yingsha is not. People think that there is no room for error in international tournaments and Sun Yingsha needs to be present in ticketed tournaments to ensure revenue, is she really the only one left?", another Chinese fan continued to criticize.
"A key player is being treated badly, it seems to me that the coaching staff don't want her to rest until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics," said another fan.
Notably, many Chinese table tennis fans called for the dismissal of coach Ma Lin, saying that this coach has no talent.
"He cannot control the situation before and during the matches. He cannot give any technical instructions or stand by his players.
He doesn't have the courage to stand on the podium and shouldn't be the head coach anymore," a Chinese fan concluded.
