On August 16, Ho Chi Minh City People's Court reopened the first instance trial of defendant Le Hoang Long (32 years old, from Hai Phong) for the crime of "prostitution brokerage".
Defendant Long's family hired two lawyers to defend Long, but at today's court hearing, both lawyers were absent, even though the court had served them with a valid decision to bring the case to trial.
The representative of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Procuracy said that the two lawyers had been properly served and were absent without valid reasons, so they requested to continue the trial.
Defendant Le Hoang Long received 5 years and 6 months in prison.
At the trial, Le Hoang Long testified that through social networks, two guests, PBK and NHH, wanted to buy sex from famous people in the art field, so he talked to these two guests over the phone.
After that, Le Hoang Long brokered the two guests to two girls, TTMD (28 years old, from Tuyen Quang) and TTT (23 years old, from Gia Lai).
Long confessed that after agreeing on the price of prostitution at 15,000 USD/person/night, Long was the one who booked a hotel room on Nguyen Hue Street, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City for 15 million VND/room.
In court, Long also stated that before buying and selling sex, the customer would transfer 100 million VND/customer to Long in advance as a deposit. After buying and selling sex, after deducting expenses, the remaining amount would be divided equally with the prostitute.
The representative of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Procuracy proposed a sentence of 5-6 years in prison for Long. Defending himself, the defendant Long asked the panel of judges to consider reducing his sentence.
After considering mitigating circumstances such as honest confession, repentance, and first-time offense, the panel sentenced defendant Le Hoang Long to 5 years and 6 months in prison and an additional fine of 10 million VND.
