Valuable documents about the cart and buffalo convoy pulling food to the Dien Bien Phu frontline

(Dan Tri) - During the Dien Bien Phu campaign, Thanh Hoa province mobilized hundreds of thousands of laborers, nearly 30 million working days, and more than ten thousand vehicles to transport food, weapons, medicine, and ammunition.
On the morning of April 6, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 7, 1954 - May 7, 2024), the Standing Committee of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, in coordination with the Standing Committee of the Thanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee, organized the program "Meeting and paying tribute to Dien Bien soldiers, youth volunteers, and frontline laborers who directly participated in the Dien Bien Phu campaign". Attending the meeting were about 800 Dien Bien soldiers, youth volunteers, and frontline laborers who directly participated in the Dien Bien Phu campaign, along with relatives of martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the Dien Bien Phu campaign, from the provinces of the Red River Delta and North Central region. The organizers displayed and exhibited hundreds of valuable documents, recording heroic historical images of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. Visiting the exhibition, Dien Bien soldiers were moved and emotional when looking back at the battles on the battlefields. Among hundreds of documentary images at the exhibition, there are many valuable documents about the contributions of the army and people of Thanh Hoa province - the great rear base, ensuring logistics for the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. According to statistics, during the Dien Bien Phu Campaign, Thanh Hoa province mobilized 30% of the working-age population to participate in the frontline labor force, with a total of nearly 179,000 people, 27 million working days. Notably, during 56 days and nights, Thanh Hoa mobilized more than 10,000 bicycles, 1,300 bamboo and wooden boats; 47 horse-drawn carts, 31 cars, 180 buffalo carts to transport food supplies to the frontline. Thanh Hoa provided 4,361 tons of rice, exceeding the Central level by 9 tons; 1,300 cows, 2,000 pigs, 250,000 eggs... The frontline labor force used buffalo carts to transport food and weapons to the front. People in the highland districts of Thanh Hoa used rafts to transport food and goods across the Ma River to supply the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. The porters followed each other to transport rice to the front. Engineers and laborers rushed to clear the road from Tuan Giao to Dien Bien Phu. Mr. Nguyen Trong Ap (91 years old, from Dong Quang commune, Dong Son district, Thanh Hoa) emotionally recalled the days when he and the engineering force opened the road to Dien Bien Phu. "Today, I am very moved to meet the soldiers who participated in the campaign in the past. Looking back at the precious images and battles of the past, I feel like I have returned to a time of heroic memories," Mr. Ap emotionally said. Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Do Van Chien and Secretary of Thanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee Do Trong Hung visited the photo exhibition at the program.
