In the modern context, information technology is developing rapidly and the transition from 2G networks to higher mobile technologies such as 4G or 5G is gradually becoming a global trend.
According to many statistics, the majority of 2G phone users today are the elderly, people living in remote areas and young children who are provided with "brick" phones by their parents for convenient communication in necessary situations.
In particular, older people are the group most likely to be left behind in technological transitions. This is not only because they may have difficulty adopting and using new technologies, but also because they lack the support and resources to upgrade equipment or learn new technologies.
According to the Department of Information and Communications, currently, in Son La province - one of the localities with many ethnic minorities living, there are still over 22,800 households, accounting for 7.4% of the population, not using smartphones, of which over 8,700 households are using 2G mobile phones and 14,133 households do not have mobile phones.
Transition for seniors and mountain areas
To ensure that no one is left behind, the Ministry of Information and Communications aims to stop 2G mobile technology by September 2024 at the latest. Network operators have deployed many solutions to support customers. In particular, Viettel Telecom, a member of Viettel Group, is making efforts to move all customers from 2G to 4G to "catch up" with digital life.
According to Mr. Tinh, Nguyen Trong Tinh, Deputy General Director of Viettel Telecom, economic barriers are also a big problem when the cost of a smartphone, although not high, is still an obstacle for people with low incomes. In addition, psychological issues are also a big challenge, many people are still afraid that smartphones are difficult to use and the higher cost of 4G services makes them hesitate to innovate.
To address these challenges, many solutions have been and are being implemented by Viettel, most notably the IT training program for the elderly and cost support policies from the Government and non-profit organizations, which have also partly reduced the financial burden on the elderly when switching to using new technology.
Viettel has been implementing many special support programs to encourage customers to switch from 2G to 4G. Specifically, customers can receive a free 4G smartphone when committing to using Viettel's packages for at least 6 months.
Not stopping there, Viettel is also implementing a 50% discount program for some Samsung phone models such as Samsung Galaxy A05 with a discount of 1,490,000 VND.
In addition, in the second quarter of 2024, Viettel will also support up to 1 million VND when customers buy 4G smartphones along with a variety of mobile data packages, helping users access modern technology easily and economically.
Thanks to these efforts, the elderly as well as people in remote areas not only benefit from the conveniences of 4G technology but can also overcome initial barriers, gradually becoming technology-savvy users, better integrating into the digitally connected world.
4G gradually penetrates Vietnamese people's lives and becomes an indispensable part.
The evolution of mobile technology from 2G to 4G has been an impressive journey, with each generation of technology bringing about ultimate improvements that enhance the way users communicate and experience digital life.
Then came 3G in the early 21st century, bringing significantly faster data transmission speeds, opening up the possibility of high-speed internet access, streaming video and making video calls, turning mobile phones into multi-purpose devices that serve more than just communication purposes.
In particular, 4G was launched in the late 2000s with extremely low speed and latency, allowing data transmission up to 1Gbps, improving the quality of mobile internet services, supporting smooth HD video streaming and video calling.
It can be affirmed that the "treasure" of 4G technology allows them to use popular applications such as Skype, Zoom for video calling, MyChart for personal health monitoring and news and weather applications.
Viettel’s 4G network upgrade and expansion ensures that everyone, regardless of age, can enjoy the benefits of a connected world, contributing to improving the quality of life and health of the people. This affirms the importance of investing in technology to bring comprehensive benefits to the community.
