New Zealand school wants to grant 1,000 nursing scholarships to Vietnamese

A New Zealand educational organization wants to provide 1,000 tuition scholarships, each worth about 17,500 NZD (262 million VND) to train Vietnamese nurses.

Kalandra Education, an educational organization that provides health care training courses in New Zealand, said on March 19 that the scholarship is for candidates aged 17 to 55, with priority given to those in remote areas, islands, orphans, families with preferential policies, many children, or parents who are unable to work or have serious illnesses...

Applicants must have a high school diploma or be expected to graduate within the next 10 months. In addition, applicants must have an IELTS score of 5.5 or a PTE English certificate of 42. If they do not have an IELTS score at the time of application, they can apply within 6 months.

If accepted, they will study theory for 36 weeks in Vietnam online, then go to New Zealand for 11 weeks of practical training. At the end of the course, they will be granted a certificate and can do jobs such as caring for the elderly and patients in hospitals, nursing homes, etc.

Dr Christine Clark, Principal of Kalandra Education, said New Zealand has been facing a chronic shortage of health workers since the Covid-19 pandemic. An ageing population and increased life expectancy have led to more people needing aged care services. By 2026, the country could have between 12,000 and 20,000 more people needing care services. The demand for health assistants is expected to increase by 50-75%.

Therefore, the school is interested in training nurses from Vietnam first to meet the needs in New Zealand. Besides, students can become human resources in caring for the elderly in Vietnam.

"The school will come to Vietnam in April to implement the program, agree on the time and channel to receive applications," said Ms. Christine.

Kalandra Education Group has been operating in the education sector since 1999, focusing on the healthcare industry since 2016. In early March, when attending a discussion with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh along with about 20 businesses in New Zealand, the group raised the issue of granting the above scholarships.

Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan highly appreciated this proposal and said she would coordinate with agencies to directly discuss with Kalandra.
