TPO - Le Quy Don Primary School (Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City) awarded certificates of merit to students who donated 100,000 VND or more to support flood victims. Students who donated less than that amount only received letters of merit from their homeroom teachers.
Responding to the local call, Le Quy Don Primary School launched a fundraising campaign to support the people in the North affected by storm No. 3 for staff, teachers, workers, parents and students. During the fundraising period, the school received more than 268 million VND in donations from students in 45 classes at the school.
Yesterday morning (September 23), the school awarded certificates of merit to encourage students to actively participate in the above movement. However, this award made many parents unhappy.
Ms. TB (a parent of a first grader at Le Quy Don Primary School) said that yesterday (September 23), the homeroom teacher sent a photo of the class receiving a certificate of merit for actively supporting the people in the North who suffered losses after Typhoon Yagi. After searching for her child for a long time, Ms. B. asked and the homeroom teacher explained that students who contributed over 100,000 VND would receive a certificate of merit.

“My family has two children going to school, my husband and I have also contributed to the office so we only gave each child 50,000 VND in support. I think this amount is appropriate for the children's age and the family's economy. Students, university students, and disabled people who donate 5,000 VND or 10,000 VND are being held up as examples, but the school has a very anti-educational way of praising them. Thinking about the whole class receiving certificates while my child and a few other friends sit below looking up makes me cry,” said Ms. B.
According to this parent, when her child finished school, the homeroom teacher gave her a letter of commendation. The letter was signed by the homeroom teacher.
Speaking with Tien Phong newspaper, Ms. Tran Thanh Tuyen, Vice Principal of Le Quy Don Primary School confirmed that the school organized a flag ceremony to honor students who donated VND100,000 or more to support people affected by storm No. 3.
Class representatives will receive certificates of merit and bring them back to class to give to their classmates. Students who donate less than 100,000 VND will receive letters of merit from their homeroom teachers. Of the 2,100 students at the school, 1,500 will receive certificates of merit, the rest will receive letters of merit. Because the letters of merit were not sent to students in time after the flag salute, many parents were upset.
“On the afternoon of September 23, some parents met directly with the school board to give their opinions on this form of reward. Also out of the desire to encourage students in a timely manner, the school had a careless and incomplete way of doing things. We would like to learn from our experience and will make adjustments in the next reward activities,” Ms. Tuyen said.
