Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy will open a social work major this year, enrolling 60 students in the first course and becoming the first public medical school in the South to open this major.

What do social work graduates do?

Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy has opened a social work major and will enroll the first class in 2025. In the school's plan, the permanent lecturers with appropriate expertise to preside over and teach the training program of the major include 5 doctors: Dr. Nguyen Thi Anh Nguyet, majoring in social work, Dr. Le Minh Thuan, majoring in psychology, Dr. Huynh Ho Ngoc Quynh, majoring in public health, Dr. Doan Thi Ngoc Han, majoring in health sciences; Dr. Tran Thi Kim Tu, majoring in medicine.

In addition, there are 8 departments of public health taught in the modules of the social work major.

This year, the industry will enroll the first class of 60 students and maintain this number for 3 years. The training period is 4 years, with a knowledge volume of 134 credits (excluding physical education and national defense courses).

According to the plan of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, the social work major will be recruited based on the results of the high school graduation exam, math and physics exams or biology, chemistry and natural sciences.

Social work students will study 16 general education credits, 98 professional education credits, of which 19 credits are in the basic knowledge block of the major, 22 credits are in the basic knowledge block of the major, 47 credits are in the knowledge block of the major and 10 credits are in the supplementary knowledge block.

According to the project to open a major proposed by Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, in the process of building the curriculum framework, the school consulted the following schools: Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi University of Public Health, University of Labor and Social Affairs, Ho Chi Minh City Open University, University of Kentucky (UK), University of Kansas (USA); University of South Carolina (USA); University of Texas At Austin (USA); University of Wisconsin - Whitewater (USA).

After graduation, social work students are able to meet job requirements in positions such as officers, specialists, social workers in social work departments/offices of central, provincial, district/county hospitals; social facilities, psychological counseling centers, early intervention and education units, non-governmental organizations, schools, research institutes, etc.

Why did the school open a social work major?

The project to open a social work major at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City said that training in social work is in line with the school's development strategy to become a multidisciplinary university in the health sector. On the other hand, this major is also suitable for the human resource development needs of the locality, region and country.

"The social work sector is receiving attention from the Government, ministries, and sectors, especially in the health sector, to support and provide comprehensive psychological and social care for patients," the project stated.

On the other hand, before opening the social work major, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy surveyed the human resource needs of 12 hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City and 100% of them agreed that the activities of social work graduates in hospitals were necessary.

Hospitals have a need for social work graduates and need to recruit more human resources in this field with an average of 3-4 people, working in the social work department/team. Hospitals also propose to soon train social work human resources for medical facilities, developing this profession according to the general development trend in the integration process.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy currently has 7 faculties (6 specialized faculties and 1 basic faculty), 11 functional departments, 8 centers, 5 functional units and 1 hospital. The staff and employees include 1,512 people, including 956 lecturers, accounting for 63.42%. Of these, there are 14 professors, 99 associate professors, and 401 doctors.
