The event, hosted by BIS Hanoi in Vietnam for the first time, offered students in Years 5 and 6 the opportunity to engage in a leadership development experience and collaborate to build impactful community projects. Over the two-day conference, students participated in a series of interactive workshops that focused on developing essential leadership skills, fostering personal growth and self-reflection through sharing activities and goal-setting exercises, and encouraging collaboration through idea sharing and team building. The conference approach was designed to help students identify their own strengths and areas for improvement, learn from each other, and discover new strategies for effective leadership.
At the beginning of the first day of the conference, students listened to a presentation from a representative of Keep Vietnam Clean - one of BIS Hanoi's community partners. Ms. Bui Thi Ngoc Diep - Director of Keep Vietnam Clean, shared with the students the importance of protecting the environment, thereby creating a topic for the students' discussions on the second day of the conference.
The students then continued to engage in discussions and practice sessions on topics such as core leadership values, problem-solving skills and effective teamwork. The highlight of the first day was a sharing session by Mr. Richard Vaughan - Principal of BIS Hanoi. He recounted his journey to becoming a leader, thereby inspiring the students about the true meaning of leadership.
Leah, a Grade 6 student at BIS Hanoi, shared: “The thing I enjoyed most about attending the conference was getting to know the House Captains and Student Council members from other Nord Anglia schools in Vietnam. After the program, I understood that to be a good leader means to be a person with effective communication skills.”
The focus of the second day of the conference was collaboration, ideation and action planning. In the morning, students had the opportunity to learn from BIS Hanoi Secondary School student leaders about effective communication and presentation skills. They then worked in groups to come up with ideas for environmental protection projects. These projects will be brought back to their own schools for students to apply and implement.
“It was wonderful to see the primary school students grow as they learned to collaborate, learn more about their values and develop leadership skills,” said Rebecca Carroll, Deputy Head of Primary at BIS Hanoi. “They pushed themselves out of their comfort zones, made new friendships and learned a lot.”
In addition to this conference, BIS Hanoi students are encouraged to take initiative and develop leadership skills from an early age. Each year, teachers interview and select eight House Captains to represent their respective houses, along with Student Council members from each year group. These young leaders collaborate with teachers and student leaders from the Secondary School to suggest new ideas, plan events and develop initiatives that improve school life and the sense of community.
By empowering students through leadership opportunities, schools create experiences that help them develop important life skills such as communication, teamwork, and decision-making. These experiences build resilience, foster personal growth, and help students develop the leadership skills and qualities they need to be ready for the future.
“We hope that students have been inspired by this conference and will continue to seek opportunities to actively participate and lead in school activities,” Ms Carroll added. “The school’s goal is to make this an annual conference for the four Nord Anglia international schools in Vietnam, continuing our mission of nurturing a new generation of young leaders.”
