This is Mr. Biden's first visit to Africa as US President, taking place before the leader's term ends in January 2025, demonstrating Washington's efforts to maintain influence on the continent.

During the visit, Mr. Biden will discuss peace and security issues with the host country's leaders.

Notably, according to AFP news agency, President Biden's trip will focus on a large-scale multinational project to renovate a 1,300 km railway connecting the continent's mineral-rich countries with Angola's Lobito port.

Located on the Atlantic coast, Lobito is the second busiest port in the Central African country. Angola is also the continent's eighth largest economy by Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The Lobito Port is part of a project called the “Lobito Corridor,” an infrastructure project that President Biden described as the largest-ever US investment in rail in Africa.

The corridor serves to transport vital resources, including copper and cobalt, from mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia to the port of Lobito for export to markets around the world. As such, the Lobito Corridor is considered one of the most important infrastructures for the global economy.

Alex Vines, director of the Africa Program at the Royal Institute of International Studies, said that the US is considering Angola as an emerging middle power in Africa and is aiming to strengthen its partnership with the country.

According to 2022 data from the International Energy Agency (IEA), Angola is the second largest crude oil exporter in Africa, with oil exports accounting for 90% of the country's total export volume.

For its part, Angola advocates diversifying international partnerships as well as increasing foreign direct investment (FDI), so increased US investment in Angola is important.

China is also increasing its investment in Africa, including in mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia.
