New look

Launched in 2017, the My Son Temple Conservation Project funded by the Indian Government has achieved many positive results. At the two groups of towers K and H, the excavation process has revealed many artifacts and underground architecture such as stone lion statues, corner decorations, tower tops made of stone and terracotta, some artifacts have been displayed on site for visitors.

Following the excavation, in the period of 2017 - 2019, experts from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) coordinated with Vietnamese technical staff and the My Son Cultural Heritage Management Board to restore and reinforce a number of architectural works in the two areas H and K such as the tower walls, tower body, tower base, door steps; clearing the drainage system, treating the foundation and paving the inside of the entire excavation area of the tower.

Particularly at Tower A, since 2020, experts have focused on reinforcing and renovating the main items of the project, helping to successfully restore the western door frame and 2 eastern door pillars of Tower A1, forming the main entrance steps to the A1 worshiping area; repositioning part of the fake pillar at the northwest corner, especially rearranging the A1 worshiping platform as a basis for preparing a scientific dossier to propose recognition as a national treasure.

Throughout the restoration process, the main method of implementation is to reinforce and preserve the original elements firmly, ensuring the authenticity of the relic. Almost throughout the restoration process, the mortar used in the surface layers is mainly otter oil and brick powder, the materials used are old bricks combined with new bricks suitable for each location.

Mr. Phan Ho - Director of My Son Cultural Heritage Management Board acknowledged that after 6 years of implementation (2017-2022), the project to preserve and restore My Son World Cultural Heritage has basically completed the main contents, ensuring the principles of relic conservation, and has been well evaluated by the Department of Cultural Heritage (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) and experts from the National Cultural Heritage Council.

“The completion of the restoration and embellishment work at the three towers A, H, and K not only overcomes the damage and degradation of the relics, but also helps restore and perfect the architectural space of the My Son temple complex, contributing to expanding the tourism space for the heritage,” said Mr. Ho.

Strengthening solidarity

It can be seen that the selection of 3 groups of towers A, H, K for preservation has shown the interest of the parties in the restoration of My Son Cham relics, because this is a group of architectures that was heavily damaged by time and war. The project was carefully implemented by experts, from simple to complex, using restoration methods that comply with the principles of archaeological restoration, emphasizing the preservation of original elements, repositioning, reinforcement, and reinforcement as the main thing, the newly built blocks to protect the original blocks are also only at the allowed limit and create a difference between new and old.
