Gas pipeline rupture in October 2023
According to the South China Morning Post on August 12, Chinese authorities have opened an internal investigation and recently announced the results to two European Union (EU) member states involved in the incident.
Investigations in Estonia and Finland continue and focus on the container ship NewNew Polar Bear, owned by Chinese shipping company NewNew Shipping Line.
While the investigation report is circulating among Chinese ministries, it has not yet been submitted as official evidence. Authorities in both European countries are pressing Beijing to provide details about the ship.
China's Foreign Ministry has not commented on the new information.
However, authorities in two EU member states said the Chinese container ship NewNew Polar Bear dragged its anchor along the seabed while traveling in the Baltic Sea, severing a key gas pipeline and damaging two telecommunications cables between Estonia and Finland on the night of October 7 or the morning of October 8.
The affected gas pipeline is the Balticconnector, which is 77 km long and is an important energy source for Finland.
