Accordingly, a total of 14 LLMs and enterprise applications have recently been greenlighted by authorities for commercial use, including those from smartphone giant Xiaomi, Fourth Paradigm and startup 01.AI founded by venture capitalist Lee Kai-fu.
Last year, China established the Electronic Standards Institute, the body in charge of developing national standards for LLMs.
Frontis.AI, a startup founded in 2021 by former JD.com Senior Vice President Chu Bowen, was granted LLMs “Pinshang” and “Moxiaoxian” in January. These LLMs provide consumer companies with industry insights such as product innovation and marketing support to their clients.
Meanwhile, the cybersecurity-specific LLM of ThreatBook and video solutions provider XinYi Tech was also approved in January 2024.
ThreatBook's XGPT AI model is the first LLM focused on internet security in China. The company says its LLM can help businesses analyze potential security threats in a timely and accurate manner.
In addition, XinYi Tech's LLM, also the first domestic product, focuses on AI-powered video processing and creation tools, for fields such as advertising, education , media, and even e-commerce.
Notable AI applications approved in January 2024 include a smart resume builder from online recruitment platform Zhaopin, as well as chatbots from e-commerce services company Beijing Zhidemai Tech and book and comic book magazine provider iReader Technology.
The number of LLMs and related applications approved by the government in China now totals more than 40.
However, not everyone is supportive of the rapid growth of LLMs. Robin Li Yanhong, founder, chairman and CEO of internet search and AI giant Baidu, said in a speech in November 2023 that the “frenzy” for LLMs was a “huge waste of resources.”
Li called on the government to push ahead with a major app development initiative to bring more ChatGPT-like services to market. He said that as of October 2023, 238 LLMs had been launched in the country – most of which have yet to receive government approval.
