On November 30, China restored its visa-free policy for Japanese citizens coming for short-term tourism, allowing stays of up to 30 days.

This program will be maintained until the end of 2025.

Previously, China allowed Japanese citizens to enter the country without a visa for a maximum stay of 15 days from 2003 to 2020. However, this policy has been suspended since March 2020 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The restoration of this program is expected to promote people-to-people exchanges and enhance economic cooperation between the two countries.

Currently, Japan requires all Chinese visitors to apply for a visa before entering the country, regardless of length of stay.

Before the visa waiver program was restored, Beijing demanded that Tokyo apply "equal visa status" to Chinese citizens as a condition for restoring the agreement, several sources familiar with the matter said.

To date, China has exempted visas for short-term tourists from about 40 countries, including some Southeast Asian, European and Oceanian nations, along with South Korea and Japan.

During a meeting in Peru earlier this month, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba agreed to work to promote a “stable” and mutually beneficial relationship and increase people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

Although the restoration of the visa-free policy is expected to boost tourism and trade between the two countries, there are still many challenges ahead. Observers say that issues such as geopolitical tensions, historical differences and security issues could still affect cooperation between China and Japan.
