Huawei opened a sprawling new campus on the outskirts of Shanghai, serving as a hub for China's drive for technological self-sufficiency and demonstrating the company's resilience to US sanctions.

Huawei named its new headquarters the Lianqiu Lake R&D Center, located in Jinze Town in Qingpu District, Shanghai. The new headquarters has a total construction area of about 2.06 million square meters, 10 times larger than Alphabet's Googleplex headquarters in Mountain View, California, USA.

It is expected to house around 35,000 researchers. Only two buildings are currently occupied after the first batch of Huawei employees moved in on October 14, leaving much of the sprawling complex empty.

Local sources said about 20,000 employees are expected to be working at Huawei's new headquarters by the time of the Lunar New Year in February 2025, and the workforce will increase to 30,000 by the end of 2026.

Huawei has not confirmed when the new center will be fully staffed.

The Lianqiu Lake R&D Center was completed in June this year, more than 70 kilometers away from Huawei's current headquarters in Shanghai's Pudong district.

The campus consists of eight brown and beige blocks, with 104 buildings housing various amenities, including laboratories, cafeterias, fitness centers, and recreation areas. The campus is served by electric bicycles, buses, and a shuttle train system, dotted with lakes and bridges.

In a show of official support, the Qingpu district government opened new bus routes for Huawei employees and is building a subway station nearby.

At a 2021 company meeting, Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei described the new campus as a picturesque workplace and a magnet for top talent at home and abroad, an ideal area for modern young professionals.

The influx of tech workers to Qingpu has driven up rents and property prices near Huawei’s campus, bucking a nationwide property downturn. The cost of renting a three-bedroom apartment in the nearest residential area now exceeds 6,000 yuan ($900) a month, nearly double the cost of a year ago.

Huawei has emerged as a symbol of China’s drive for technological self-sufficiency, aimed at reducing its dependence on foreign technology. Huawei is a leading provider of domestic alternatives to Nvidia’s artificial intelligence processors.

Huawei claims its Ascend 910B chip is comparable to Nvidia’s A100 chip. Huawei is testing the next-generation 910C and shipping it to major customers in China.

Last year, Huawei made a surprise return to the 5G smartphone market with the Mate 60 series, making a strong impression on domestic users.

On October 22, Huawei launched the latest version of its mobile operating system - HarmonyOS. At the event, Mr. Du Thua Dong, director of Huawei's consumer business, said that the company's phone sales in the first three quarters of the year increased by 71% compared to the same period last year.
