Growing bamboo for shoots, a new direction in economic development

Việt NamViệt Nam31/03/2024

According to statistics, up to now, the whole province has an area of bamboo planted for shoots of about 20 hectares. Of which, My Son and Hoa Son communes (Ninh Son) have over 15 hectares, the rest are in Phuoc Vinh and Phuoc Huu communes (Ninh Phuoc). There are two varieties chosen by people to plant: Tu Quy bamboo and Bat Do bamboo because bamboo shoots have no hair, thorns, are not bitter, have white, crispy flesh, and when boiled, the flesh is golden, crispy, and fragrant.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Tan Hoa village, Hoa Son commune, the air became unusually cool. Mr. Dung said: His family's Bat Do bamboo garden was purchased from Yen Bai province and planted since 2020. At first, there were 50 bamboo trees planted along the stream banks to keep the soil from eroding and to raise bamboo rats, but realizing that this type of bamboo produced quite a lot of bamboo shoots, he decided to convert part of the cassava growing area to intensive cultivation of 5 sao of bamboo shoots with two varieties of Bat Do and Tu Quy bamboo shoots.

According to Mr. Dung, Tu Quy bamboo shoots are sweeter and crispier than other types of bamboo shoots on the market, so the selling price is also somewhat higher. The lowest point during the rainy season is 15,000-20,000 VND/kg, 10,000 VND/kg higher than other types of bamboo shoots. The highest price is 40,000-45,000 VND/kg. Every three days, the family harvests 50-70kg, earning nearly ten million VND per month, so the family is very excited.

Farmers in Hoa Son commune (Ninh Son) take care of bamboo shoot gardens.

Many bamboo farmers who sell bamboo shoots said that thanks to the proactive irrigation water source, bamboo shoots can be harvested year-round. Hoa Son farmers mainly harvest bamboo shoots in the off-season (from December to July) to sell at high prices. At present, the selling price of fresh bamboo shoots is at 40,000 VND/kg, each sao of bamboo shoots, if well cared for, can yield 5-7 kg/day.

Bamboo shoots are easy to grow and require little care. Every year, you only need to clear the branches and leaves, clean the garden, cut down old tree trunks, fertilize once and water thoroughly so that the tree can grow and develop well, without pests or diseases, so there is no need to spend money on pesticides. In addition, bamboo growers also propagate by cutting bamboo branches to sell when the market needs them to increase income.

Mr. Do Huu Cuong, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Hoa Son Commune, said: Thanks to the high efficiency, many farmers in the commune have expanded the area of bamboo cultivation to more than 5 hectares. This is a crop suitable for local soil and climate conditions and is a new direction with many prospects for farmers, helping to develop the economy towards building new rural areas in the locality.
