Marca (Spain) reported that the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has temporarily suspended referee Munuera Montero from all international tournaments managed by this agency. Previously, on February 18, the organizing committee of La Liga (the highest level of Spanish football) removed Mr. Montero from the list of referees for the next round of matches taking place this weekend.
Referee Montero caused controversy in the match between Osasuna and Real Madrid on February 15. Believing that Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid) had used offensive words, Mr. Montero showed a red card and expelled this star.
Referees suspected of corruption are suspended across Europe.
However, the English midfielder insisted that he did not say such a thing. According to British and Spanish media, Bellingham used an exclamation in English, not aimed at the referee but the word can easily be confused with swearing.
After the match, coach Carlo Ancelotti criticized referee Montero's decision to show a red card. This event exacerbated the tension between Real Madrid and La Liga, the Spanish Football Federation in recent times.
In early February, Real Madrid filed a complaint with the Spanish Football Federation against referee Alejandro Muniz Ruiz and VAR assistant Javier Villanueva. In the four-page complaint, the Bernabeu team cited many controversial refereeing decisions in the loss to Espanyol, in which they were on the disadvantaged side.
According to Real Madrid, the referee's decisions "exceeded any margin of human error or referee interpretation". The Royal team described the match as "the culmination of a completely discredited refereeing system" and accused Mr. Muniz of "distorting and falsifying the reality of what happened".
For referee Montero, the criticism directed at him is not only due to the recent match of Real Madrid. Spanish media reported that Mr. Montero may have had shady relationships with some teams in La Liga, through the activities of an intermediary company. Representatives of La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation defended referee Montero against the criticism and threats. However, these agencies also confirmed that they will open an investigation into the negative suspicions.
