The incident happened in the 37th minute, in the second leg of the AFF Cup 2024 semi-final between Thailand and the Philippines on the evening of December 30.
In this play, Thailand's Seksan Ratree tried to save the ball from the end of the goal line. He then passed it to captain Peeradon Chamratsamee to score the opening goal for Thailand.

The Philippines players argued that the ball had gone out of bounds before Seksan Ratree made the pass. However, the referee, after hearing the signal from the VAR team, still decided to award the goal to Thailand.
Speaking to Dan Tri reporter right after this situation happened, a famous former FIFA referee of Vietnamese football commented: "With the camera angle provided by the match organizers, we have to give up. It is impossible to determine 100% whether the ball went out, or a small part of the ball was still on the field?".

"In situations like this, there needs to be vertical camera angles, from above, or from the sideline flagpole. With the above camera angles, when taking close-up shots, it will be possible to determine whether the ball is still in play or has completely gone out. In this case, the match organizers do not have such camera angles," the former FIFA referee further analyzed.
That is the reason why the VAR referee team, even though they have reviewed the situation, still cannot give their opinion, the entire referee team must respect the decision of the main referee.

According to the rules of football, a ball is considered out of play when 100% of the ball is out of bounds. Conversely, if even a very small portion, even 0.01%, of the ball is in play, the ball is still considered in play.
With the perspective of the match organizers and the AFF Cup organizers surrounding the controversial situation in the 37th minute mentioned above, Philippine fans might say that the ball went out of play.
However, Thai fans will have the opposite opinion. Meanwhile, as mentioned, the Organizing Committee does not have enough technology and camera angles to make a clear statement about this situation.
After 120 minutes of play, Thailand beat the Philippines 3-1 at Rajamangala Stadium and won 4-3 overall after two semi-finals of the AFF Cup 2024. The Golden Temple team will meet the Vietnamese team in the final on January 2 and January 5.
