Growing asparagus is considered the king of vegetables, strawberries bear red fruit at the Heaven's Gate of Binh Dinh, tourists are coming

“Heaven’s Gate” Vinh Son is a mountainous, particularly disadvantaged commune of Vinh Thanh district (Binh Dinh province). Mr. Bui Ngoc Thanh, a Muong ethnic, is implementing a clean agricultural model, combining unique experiential tourism. Here, he grows asparagus-king vegetables; strawberries and many other types of fresh vegetables, tubers and fruits.

Green startups… at the "heaven's gate"

In 2022, Mr. Bui Ngoc Thanh, a Muong ethnic in Vinh Son commune, Vinh Thanh mountainous district, Binh Dinh province, boldly borrowed capital from the district's Social Policy Bank with an initial capital of 100 million VND to invest in a farm.

He invested in growing strawberries, asparagus and other vegetables to reduce labor, increase crop productivity, create a brand, and build an image of local agricultural products.

"In the past, my family only grew acacia and cassava, but the income was not high, just enough to eat. With the thought that if I want to get rich, I have to change my way of thinking and doing things.

In 2020, during a trip to visit vegetable growing models in the Central Highlands provinces with my relatives, I came home to think and discuss with my family about growing strawberries, asparagus and short-term vegetables and received support from my family," said farmer Bui Ngoc Thanh.

According to farmer Thanh, in 2020, he started going back to Da Lat to buy strawberry seeds to test grow on the abandoned land behind his house.

When I first started growing strawberries, I encountered many difficulties and obstacles. Sometimes I thought it would be difficult to succeed, because at that time I had no knowledge about how to grow and care for this plant. The plant had pests and diseases that made the leaves turn yellow, and the yield was very low when harvested.

Wherever he falls, he gets back up, so this farmer both works and learns from experience, combining learning strawberry growing knowledge on the internet and then applying it to reality.

"Currently, the area of land I am growing strawberries, asparagus and short-term vegetables is 1 hectare," said Mr. Thanh.

Take guests… to visit the vegetable garden

Realizing that the agricultural tourism market is developing strongly, with the knowledge he learned about tourism and the time he spent participating in community tourism in Gia Lai province, farmer Bui Ngoc Thanh decided to open an experiential tour for tourists in need.

The tour focuses on experiencing Vinh Son nature through the following points: Ta Kon Citadel, bathing in Lo Pin stream and learning about the process of fertilizing, planting and harvesting strawberries and asparagus.

Visitors to Vinh Son "heaven's gate" are very excited about strawberry harvesting activities, combined with experience tours and rustic cuisine.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Diep (a tourist from Quy Nhon City) said that her family had just gone to Vinh Son to enjoy the fresh, cool air. Here, family members picked and tasted the delicious flavor of freshly harvested strawberries.
"My children were very excited because they were able to harvest fresh and delicious strawberries with their own hands. When I returned, I told my friends, relatives and everyone about this experience. Everyone was eager to come to Vinh Son Heaven Gate to enjoy the community tourism experience here," Ms. Diep excitedly shared.

According to Mr. Dinh Khanh - Chairman of Vinh Son Commune People's Committee, Vinh Thanh District, Binh Dinh, in Vinh Son Commune, most households are Ba Na ethnic people. The model of developing household economy combined with experiential tourism of farmer Bui Ngoc Thanh brings good signals and this is an opportunity for people to learn and follow to escape poverty, aiming to do community tourism.

"The locality will continue to propose that authorities have policies to support, encourage and expand the agricultural model combined with indigenous tourism experiences in Vinh Son land," said Mr. Dinh Khanh.
