Mr. Le Ba Tan (2nd from left), Director of Viettel IDC, shared about Viettel's orientation on AI development in the context that this technology is a common concern of many businesses around the world.
“Vietnam’s economy is growing very fast, probably one of the fastest growing economies in the region, and Viettel is one of the largest operators. Vietnam and Viettel’s voice deserves to be louder in the industry and this event is the first step in that process,” said Julian Gorman, Asia-Pacific Regional Director of the Global Mobile Association (GSMA) at the Digital Nation 2025 Summit.
The GSMA Digital Nation Summit 2025 was held for the first time in Vietnam on April 15. The conference, organized by the Global Mobile Association (GSMA), is part of a series of digital transformation activities in countries in the region, with the participation of major technology companies such as Qualcomm, Nokia, Ericsson, LG, etc.
The event aims to create a bridge between large international corporations and the domestic technology industry, promote digital solutions for Vietnam's digital economy, pave the way for innovation, enhance competitiveness and protect users from digital challenges.
With the theme Connecting Vietnam - The role of the mobile industry in building a digital nation, the conference focused on discussing solutions to build a modern and sustainable digital ecosystem in Vietnam. Participating in the event, the Military Industry - Telecommunications Group (Viettel) hopes to bring global technology ideas to Vietnam.
AI creates the network of the future
In the discussion “Impact of AI in Telecommunications and Technology”, Mr. Le Ba Tan, Director of Viettel IDC, shared about the irreplaceable role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the current technology field.
“Attending events like the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, anyone can see that AI is the focus of global attention,” he emphasized. According to him, to effectively apply AI, businesses from retail to corporations like Nokia, Ericsson, or LG Uplus need to find the right direction, especially in handling data traffic, especially uplink (data sent up), as AI continues to develop.
In terms of data traffic, Tan explained that in 4G networks, uplinks account for less than 5% of downlinks, mainly due to activities like video streaming. “This phenomenon is becoming more common,” he said, but more research is needed on the impact of AI on uplinks.
In addition, as part of the plan to develop artificial intelligence, Viettel representative said that the Group is promoting investment in AI infrastructure, using equipment from NVIDIA (such as B200, B300, and soon H200), ASUS, SuperMicro, reflecting the priority of national resources for technology as required by Resolution 57.
Along with that, we are building connectivity solutions to support the development and training of large language models (LLM). “Viettel is building LLM to serve both the Group internally and external customers, in line with two market needs: one is that businesses want to use AI to reach customers more effectively, the other is to build LLM to meet specialized business needs,” said a Viettel representative.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh (far right), from Viettel Cyber Security Company, shares about measures to identify fraudulent messages without violating customers' privacy.
However, Mr. Tan added that LLM is currently mainly developing in countries with strong infrastructure such as the US or Europe. In Vietnam, the demand for LLM is still limited, but Viettel IDC is preparing infrastructure to anticipate the trend, especially when the ASEAN market is expected to grow strongly in the next few years and Vietnam is aiming for a digital economy of 30% of GDP by 2030.
Building Digital Trust as Fraud Soars
At the discussion session on “Protecting Digital Trust Against the Threat of Change”, moderator David Tuckington from BSM pointed out that 89% of users in Vietnam are concerned about their accounts being hacked, with common forms of fraud such as fake investments or emotional scams. Speaker from Viettel, Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Partner Director of Viettel Cyber Security Company, called for multi-sectoral cooperation to combat fraud, in line with Resolution 57 on ensuring cybersecurity throughout digital transformation.
“Network operators, banks, and the government need to work together to prevent indiscriminate data mining and block illegal money flows,” said Mr. Thanh. To solve the problem of identifying fraudulent messages without violating customer privacy, Viettel’s speaker proposed a way to completely process data on users’ devices, avoiding the collection of sensitive information to external systems.
In particular, it is important to establish a mechanism based on user consent to share information necessary to combat fraud. And solutions must be designed to protect the data of information providers. “Before integrating a secure API (application programming interface, which functions as a bridge between software) with the bank, the system can detect anomalies and forward that information to the authorities for processing. This data-driven approach ensures a comprehensive balance between security and privacy,” Thanh gave an example.
During the discussion, speakers from other businesses also shared about anti-phishing methods. Mr. Hsien-Huy from Netsweeper presented about AI technology that helps block phishing links by analyzing website requests, preventing malicious content before reaching users. Mr. Sokyong Lee from LG Uplus shared about AI system that detects fraud through voice in real time, combined with functional forces to handle.
Speakers agreed that building a legal framework, effective data sharing and raising public awareness are core elements to deal with sophisticated forms of fraud, requiring close cooperation between stakeholders, serving the tasks set out in Resolution 57 on raising awareness and improving institutions.

Within the framework of the National Digital Summit 2025, other representatives of Viettel also had presentations and speeches expressing Viettel's commitment to realizing Resolution 57 on promoting science, technology, innovation, and national digital transformation.
Mr. Nguyen Dat, Deputy General Director of Viettel, emphasized the goal of nationwide 5G coverage by 2026, contributing to the country's digital infrastructure development strategy. A representative of Viettel High Tech - the unit in charge of researching and manufacturing high-tech equipment of Viettel Group - said that Viettel has now completely mastered 5G core network technology, affirming its role as both a telecommunications operator and a technology researcher and developer.
