These days, Ms. Vu Thi Hoa, Kim Son Hamlet, Kim Dinh Ward, (Ba Ria City, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province) is harvesting 3,000 square meters of chives. According to Ms. Hoa, this is a sandy, loose land, so it is suitable for growing leafy plants like chives.
Chives are drought-resistant plants and need to be watered regularly. Therefore, Ms. Hoa installed a water-saving irrigation system in the form of a sprinkler.
When first planted, she watered 3 times/day, until the chives had taken root and grown well, she only needed to water them 2 times/day, avoiding watering at noon.
“Growing chives requires little investment but brings stable and long-term income. Compared to other vegetables, chives may be more expensive, but they can only be harvested for 1-2 months.
As for chives, you only need to plant them once and you will have a steady harvest in the following months, almost year-round. On average, my family earns more than 20 million VND per month from the chive garden,” Ms. Hoa added.
Mr. Vu Van Khue, Kim Son Ward is also growing about 4,000m2 of chives. Mr. Khue said that every 10 days, his family harvests nearly 4 tons of chives, currently traders buy them for 11,000 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, his family earns a profit of more than 30 million VND per month.
The family of Ms. Vu Thi Hoa, a farmer growing chives in Kim Son area, Kim Dinh ward (Ba Ria city, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province) took advantage of the opportunity to bundle chives (half a kilo/bundle) to deliver to traders in time.
Kim Dinh Ward has 75 hectares of leafy vegetables of all kinds (cabbage, amaranth, Malabar spinach, onions, chives...), with an output of 1,537 tons/year.
Among the vegetable growing households in the ward, there are 23 chive growing households that have joined together to establish a Professional Farmers' Association, with a cultivation area of more than 5 hectares.
Thanks to the flexibility in crop conversion, people's lives have changed a lot over the years.
Not only for vegetable growers, many people also have additional income from accompanying services such as picking chives after harvest, many vegetable purchasing warehouses have emerged, creating stable output for people to feel secure in production.
Chives are suitable for local soil conditions, do not require capital to buy seeds, are rarely affected by pests and diseases and do not require much care.
This is the most economically efficient vegetable crop in the ward. Currently, the People's Committee of Kim Dinh Ward is recommending people to develop a safe vegetable production model and encouraging farmers to join together to establish cooperatives and production groups.
“The chive growing profession has created livelihoods, increased income for people and contributed to local socio-economic development,” said Nguyen Van Tinh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Kim Dinh Ward (Ba Ria City, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province).
