According to information from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, at 6:00 a.m. on January 23, the temperature in Hanoi measured in Ha Dong was 9.9 degrees Celsius.
Based on this temperature and regulations of the Department of Education and Training, kindergartens and primary schools in the city simultaneously notified parents not to send their children to school, let them stay home and study online to ensure their health.
Chu Van An Primary School (Hoang Mai District, Hanoi) sent a notice to parents and teachers of all classes to thoroughly inform students to stay home from school. The school also asked parents to keep their children warm to ensure their health.
In addition to informing students to stay home due to the cold weather below 10 degrees Celsius, Be Van Dan Primary School (Dong Da District, Hanoi) also asked parents to keep warm and pay attention to their children's health. "If there is no one to look after them, parents can still send their children to school, the homeroom teacher will help look after them," the school noted.
The weather is below 10 degrees Celsius, so schools in Hanoi all let students stay home.
Similarly, Van Dien B Town Primary School (Hanoi) also asked parents to keep their children warm and stay home from school to ensure their health. In cases where parents have sent their children to school, the school will still organize to look after and keep the children warm in the classroom, and will not organize outdoor activities.
Phuong Liet Primary School (Thanh Xuan, Hanoi) sent information to parents of the whole school for students to study online at home (time and content according to the announcement of each class's homeroom teacher).
"If parents have difficulty managing students at home, parents can bring students to school - the school will organize management and guide students in their studies (from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)," the school's announcement stated.
Mr. Pham Van Ngát, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Thanh Tri district, said that according to the regulations of the Department of Education and Training and the Department of Education and Training, when the weather is below 10 degrees Celsius, parents of preschool children and primary school students can proactively let their children stay home, and schools will also have detailed announcements and instructions updated daily and hourly.
However, according to quick updates from some schools, there are still cases where parents do not check the forecast or read the announcements from teachers and still send their children to school. Although students are off, teachers still go to work as usual, so schools arrange teachers to look after students in class, keep them warm, and ensure their health.
Teaching activities at schools will be switched to online learning or homework assignments for students. At the same time, the Department of Education and Training of Thanh Tri district has also proactively requested schools to plan to make up for the days students are absent due to the cold weather.
"During this prolonged cold spell, the Department of Education and Training also requires schools not to organize collective or outdoor activities, and not to require students to wear uniforms. At the same time, schools adjust their school schedules to 8am - 9am to ensure that students do not come to class too early," Mr. Pham Van Ngát added.
Ms. Pham Dam Thuc Hanh, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Hoang Mai (Hanoi) informed that this morning, students in the district will stay home from school because the weather in the capital is below 10 degrees Celsius.
"Schools strictly follow the policy of letting students stay home to avoid the cold, putting students' health first," said Ms. Hanh, adding that in cases where families are too busy to arrange childcare, schools will arrange for students to go to class, keep them warm, and organize appropriate teaching activities for them.
Previously, a representative of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that for some inner-city schools, the facilities are very good, transportation is convenient, sending children to school is also a good option if the family has a necessary need. Based on the general regulations issued by the Department, schools can be flexible to suit, on the basis of what is best for the health of students, with the consent of parents.
Taking care of children on cold days requires schools to be more meticulous, with more suitable food menus, enough warm water for children to clean up, and warm classrooms. Even if some students arrive very late due to the cold weather, the school still has to pick them up, and is not too strict about the time.
The Hanoi Department of Education and Training recommends that schools should not organize outdoor activities for students; need to ensure students' health when organizing outdoor physical education classes; and not require students to wear uniforms if the weather is too cold.
