On September 26, the Center for Industry and Trade Information (Ministry of Industry and Trade) Ho Chi Minh City branch organized a workshop on consulting information and applying AI technology for import and export to the US market.

At the workshop, a number of import and export experts shared information to help businesses better understand the legal framework, product origin, preferential origin of goods; preparation work, risk prevention to achieve success in exporting to the US market.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Huu Tam, Deputy Director of the Center for Industry and Trade Information - Ho Chi Minh City Branch, said that over the past years, including the Covid-19 pandemic, Vietnam's economy has been one of the fastest growing economies in the region and the world. To maintain this achievement and have further successes, the role of businesses is indispensable, especially import-export businesses.

Therefore, the consulting workshop will provide the latest import-export information for businesses that are exporting and interested in exporting agriculture and F&B to the US market.

Thereby, businesses and entrepreneurs will have an overview of the agricultural and F&B import-export industry to the US market in the near future and effectively utilize existing resources to develop sustainable businesses, improve the quality and efficiency of production and business activities to take advantage of new opportunities in the coming time,” Mr. Tam emphasized.

It is known that in recent years, many key agricultural products of Vietnam such as vegetables, fruits, rice, coffee, cashew nuts, pepper, etc. have established an important position in the world market. Many agricultural products exported by Vietnam have increasingly met the quality standards of the market, even the demanding markets such as the United States and Europe (EU).

According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, in the first 7 months of 2024, Vietnam's agricultural product export turnover increased by 27% over the same period in 2023, reaching 12.4 billion USD.

Currently, there are 8 types of fresh fruits allowed to be imported into the US market, including dragon fruit, mango, longan, lychee, rambutan, star apple, grapefruit, coconut... It is forecasted that Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports to the US in 2024 will continue to grow positively.

As for the industry Food and catering industry (F&B), in the first 7 months of 2024, Vietnam's import and export turnover increased compared to the same period in 2023 (except for coffee and rice, which decreased). Of which, the export turnover of confectionery and cereal products was 87.4 million USD, up 4% compared to the first 7 months of 2023, fruit juice exports increased by 15%, fresh or frozen vegetables increased by 30.1%, processed vegetables and fruits increased by 23.5%...

In addition, some Vietnamese enterprises export malt beer, carbonated mineral water and non-alcoholic beverages. However, the export turnover of these items is still quite modest.

According to experts, Vietnam's food and beverage industry has many advantages due to its rich, abundant and large-volume agricultural raw materials. However, there are still limitations due to small-scale production, limited capital, rudimentary production, many scattered stages, etc., leading to difficulties in tracing origin and controlling quality. Exported products are mainly raw, with little focus on building brands and trademarks, so their value is low and they are not recognized by foreign consumers.

Furthermore, the US market has high regulations and standards for food and beverage groups. Therefore, according to experts, in order for food and beverage to penetrate the market, it is necessary to focus on quality, fully comply with the regulations of the FDA and the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) to increase the opportunity to export to the US market.

In addition, fruit growing and processing areas must comply with standards such as GlobalGAP, environmental certification, ISO, HACCP, USDA, ensuring no pesticide residues, no contamination with microorganisms, bacteria, fungi. During the harvesting process, it must ensure that the quality of the fruit is not affected. Processed products must comply with procedures such as registration, documentation according to regulations of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and packaging requirements.

Mr. Ma Thanh Danh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of CIB International Consulting Joint Stock Company, said that the biggest barrier to the US market is the legality and technical barriers that require very high standards. Next, they buy in large quantities, requiring Vietnamese enterprises to optimize production costs, operating costs and manage product quality, and lower prices to be competitive with other countries because the US market is a big playground for businesses around the world.

Mr. Danh also recommended that Vietnamese enterprises wishing to export products to the US market need to have a specific plan for which customers they will target and what core products they will produce. Products need to be of superior quality and associated with Vietnamese cultural specialties to be competitive, otherwise it is difficult to create an advantage.

“Take advantage of Vietnamese culinary culture, regional specialties in Vietnam such as vermicelli, pho, banh mi… and 'hit' the Vietnamese community, the Asian community in the United States first, then conquer the Americans,” Mr. Danh shared.
