North Korea launched more balloons loaded with trash toward South Korea on September 22, just four days after a similar launch, the South Korean military said.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JSC) confirmed that North Korea continued its balloon launching campaign and warned that the balloons could fly towards Seoul and surrounding Gyeonggi Province.
JCS spokesman Lee Chang Hyun explained that North Korean balloons are equipped with heating timers to separate the trash from the balloon and drop it to the ground, but the devices can cause fires if not properly detached.
He also stressed that "shooting down balloons in mid-air increases the risk of debris or hazardous materials falling to the ground," so the safest course of action now is to quickly collect the balloons after they fall on their own.
Since late May, North Korea has launched thousands of balloons filled with trash in retaliation for a campaign of anti-Pyongyang leaflets sent across the border by defectors and North Korean activists in South Korea.
In response to the balloon launches, the South Korean military has been broadcasting anti-North Korean propaganda programs daily through loudspeakers at the border since July 21.
The South Korean military has refrained from directly shooting down balloons from North Korea, citing safety concerns.
