The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on October 10 quoted an expert as saying that the DPRK's spy satellite program is an "indispensable" measure to counter the US's space power.

According to expert Ri Song Jin at the DPRK National Space Technology Administration, the US militarizes space to enhance its preemptive nuclear strike capabilities and ensure "world supremacy".

The expert accused the US of seeking greater military power in Asia by expanding its space power, citing the recent visit of US Space Force Commander John Raymond to Japan and the deployment of a part of the service to South Korea, where members participated in joint exercises for the first time last year.

According to him, those moves "are nothing more than a camouflage to cover up a scenario of preemptive attacks on anti-American and independent countries."

The US did not immediately comment on the matter, but has previously said many times that its activities in the region are aimed at deterring Pyongyang and maintaining peace on the Korean peninsula.

North Korea has twice failed to put a spy satellite into orbit, in May and August, and has said it will try again in October.

In another article, KCNA quoted international affairs commentator Ra Jong Min as criticizing Canada's plan to mobilize military ships, aircraft and personnel for "Operation NEON," aimed at ensuring the implementation of UN sanctions against North Korea.

In a development related to the Korean peninsula, Reuters quoted information from the South Korean Ministry of Defense on October 10 saying that the US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan will dock at Busan port this week.

The ship is expected to arrive on October 11 and stay until October 16. Last year, the aircraft carrier returned to South Korea for the first time in about four years, along with other military vessels.

The South Korean Navy said it and the US Navy conducted joint maritime exercises with the Japan Self-Defense Force in waters near Jeju Island from October 9-10.

The trilateral exercise, the first such exercise since 2016, is aimed at deterring and responding to "increasing nuclear and missile threats" from North Korea, according to a statement from the South Korean Navy.
