North Korea's foreign ministry said drones had flown over Pyongyang at night this week and last week and the intrusions required retaliation, the North's KCNA news agency reported.
"The ROK (South Korea) should immediately stop irresponsible and dangerous provocations that could cause armed conflict and lead to war between the two sides," the ministry said.
KCNA posted photos, including one showing a blurred triangular object labeled a “drone” dropping another object labeled a “bundle of leaflets.” One image also showed a cloud of small objects labeled “leaflets.”
Another photo shows black, yellow and white leaflets comparing the economic situation in South Korea with North Korea, and containing language critical of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
South Korea's Yonhap news agency quoted an official at the Joint Chiefs of Staff as saying they needed to investigate whether a private group had sent the leaflets into North Korea.
North Korea's foreign ministry said there would be no further warnings and that North Korea would take immediate action in case South Korea continued to send drones into its territory.
Technically, the two Koreas remain at war after the 1950-53 conflict ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty.
