(NLDO)- When the "prey" participates in "sex" chat, the subjects will record pornographic clips, then threaten to "blackmail" them.
On December 26, Quang Ninh Provincial Police announced that Ha Long City Police had successfully organized a special case, arresting 15 subjects using high technology to extort property from many victims on the internet.
Subjects at the police station
During the initial investigation, the police identified this group of subjects through Facebook, Thread, and Tinder applications using fake images of young women posting pornographic posts and inviting friends.
When the "prey" messages, the subjects will lure them to the account on the Telegram application to talk and respond according to a pre-programmed structure; at the same time, use pornographic videos and video-integration software to create video calls to entice the victim to chat "sex".
Along with that, the subjects recorded the entire conversation. Then, the subjects searched for the victim's Facebook account through the victim's phone number to get information about family members, occupation, relationships and threatened to ask the victim to transfer money. If they did not transfer, they would send pornographic clips of the victim to these relationships.
The investigation team identified Nguyen Ngoc Hai (born in 1991, residing in Tan Tien village, Le Loi commune, Ha Long city) as the mastermind and leader. From April to June 2024, Hai went to Cambodia to work, specializing in fraud and extortion of other people's property using similar methods and tricks. After returning to Vietnam in October 2024, Hai recruited 14 other subjects (mainly subjects from other provinces who had worked in Cambodia) to continue to commit acts of extortion.
Means used by subjects to commit crimes
At the police station, the subjects confessed that they were trained and taught by Nguyen Duc Hai, and were provided with food and accommodation on site. Revenues under 100 million received 35% commission, and revenues over 100 million received 45 percent commission.
At the scene where the criminals committed their crimes, Ha Long City Police seized evidence including 15 desktop computers; 52 mobile phones and 100 mobile phone SIM cards of various types.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Phu, Captain of the Criminal Police Team of Ha Long City Police, said: "This is a group of professional subjects, gathering subjects with experience who have worked in Cambodia to gather together to assign, decentralize, and assign roles to each subject in this group. Although this group has just started operating, it has organized the extortion of property from over 500 people from the southern to northern provinces with an estimated amount of more than 4 billion VND."
Currently, Ha Long City Police are continuing to investigate and expand the case.
