The project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice associated with green growth began in Hau Giang on the morning of December 12.

Accordingly, by 2030, the project aims to form a specialized rice growing area of 1 million hectares associated with the reorganization of the production system according to the value chain. The rice growing area in the project will pilot the carbon credit payment policy based on the results of focusing on low emissions associated with green growth. Rice by-products will be reproduced in the direction of circular agricultural economy and exploiting values to create many processed products from rice. Successful pilots in the Mekong Delta will be expanded nationwide towards the goal of creating livelihoods and orienting sustainable development for rice farmers. At the launching ceremony, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan said that climate change, market fluctuations and changes in consumer trends are increasingly affecting the agricultural sector. Increasingly high and strict market requirements require the quality of rice to be improved. He said that farmers need to promote their community responsibility in protecting the environment, reducing the use of chemical products and reducing emissions during the production process. These factors help farmers increase their income on the same production area.

Ms. Carolyn Turk, Country Director of the World Bank in Vietnam, said that she will support the project in participating in the voluntary carbon credit market. Financial resources from selling carbon credits will help farmers have resources to continue production activities and livelihoods.

During the launching ceremony, mechanical equipment such as seeders, drones, etc. demonstrated activities serving high-tech agricultural production. The Mekong Delta has a stable rice production volume of 24-25 million tons per year, accounting for over 50% of rice production and over 90% of rice exports of the whole country.
