IMF CEO Kristalina Georgieva told AFP: “Your job could disappear entirely… or artificial intelligence could enhance your job, so you would actually be more productive and your income could increase.”
"And the more highly skilled jobs you have, the greater the impact," Georgieva added.
The impact of AI is expected to differ across developing countries, with 40% of jobs in emerging markets expected to be affected. This figure would be 26% of jobs in low-income countries.
The report also indicates that while these labor markets may see a smaller initial impact from AI, they are also less likely to benefit from increased productivity thanks to AI tools.
Georgieva said: “We have to focus on helping low-income countries, in particular, develop faster so they can seize the opportunities that artificial intelligence will bring. So, artificial intelligence, yes, is a little scary. But it is also a huge opportunity for everyone.”
