With Tran Quyet Chien, he is still the leading player of Vietnamese 3-cushion carom billiards in the world arena. Although there are times when his performance is not good, Tony Tran (nickname of Tran Quyet Chien) can still "explode" if given the opportunity. This was proven at the Porto World Cup 2023 taking place in late June and early July this year.
Tran Quyet Chien had a season considered the most successful in his career.
This is the tournament where Tony Tran is ranked 10th in the world, however, Tony Tran has entered the tournament in Portugal very successfully. The number 1 player of Vietnam has successively defeated higher ranked players such as Sameh Sidhom (Egypt), Tasdemir Tayfun (Türkiye), Kim Haeng Jik (Korea)... before overcoming his junior Chiem Hong Thai in the semi-finals and once again overcoming Sidhom in the final with a score of 50-30 to win the championship.
With this victory, Tony Tran has won the World Cup championship for the second time after the championship in Ho Chi Minh City in 2018 when defeating Ngo Dinh Nai in the final match. The player born in 1984 is also the only person in the history of Vietnamese 3-cushion carom billiards to win the World Cup tournament.
Tran Quyet Chien is still missing the world championship title.
Currently in his collection, Tran Quyet Chien has 2 World Cup, Asian and SEA Games championships, the only title he is missing is the title at the world championship. Last September in Türkiye, Tony Tran was very close to the world championship title when he reached the final for the first time but only achieved the runner-up position.
However, the most impressive achievement of Vietnamese billiards in 2023 is the world championship of the 1995-born player Bao Phuong Vinh. Although it was only his first time participating in the world's most prestigious tournament of 3-cushion carom, the player from Binh Duong made a big splash when he continuously won against strong players to enter the final match with his senior Tran Quyet Chien.
Bao Phuong Vinh makes his name in the history of Vietnamese billiards
In the final match of Vietnam billiards, Bao Phuong Vinh won 50-34 to make history in Vietnam billiards by becoming the first Vietnamese player to win the world's largest tournament after 75 years of organization. The best achievement of Vietnam billiards in this arena is the runner-up position of Nguyen Duc Anh Chien in the 2019 tournament.
However, both Tran Quyet Chien (world No. 6) and Bao Phuong Vinh (world No. 8) still have big goals for themselves in the 2024 season. For Tony Tran, it will be to change the color of the medal at the world championship taking place in Vietnam in addition to breaking through the world rankings. Meanwhile, Bao Phuong Vinh will have to defend the prestigious title along with conquering titles in the World Cup arena.
Tran Quyet Chien and Bao Phuong Vinh create a memorable season for Vietnamese billiards
In the 2023 season, Vietnamese billiards will also introduce a promising young player with a very solid playing style, Chiem Hong Thai. The most impressive achievement of the player born in 1999 is the 3rd place at the Porto World Cup. Other players such as Tran Thanh Luc or Dao Van Ly also had memorable matches in 2023 to help Vietnamese billiards become a formidable country in the world 3-cushion carom event.
