Tran Anh Hung won Best Director at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
The film is adapted from the novel La Vie et la passion de Dodin-Bouffant gourmet (1924) by French writer Marcel Rouff. La Passion de Dodin Bouffant is set in 1885, a time when French cuisine was at its peak. The film revolves around chef Eugénie (Juliette Binoche) and gourmet Dodin Bouffant (Benoit Magimel).
The two worked together for two decades and gradually developed feelings for each other over time. They created passionate dishes that were admired by the world's top chefs. However, Eugénie longed for freedom and did not want to get married. Then Dodin decided to do something he had never done before: Cook for Eugénie. The film stars two French movie stars, Juliette Binoche and Benoit Magimel. In addition, 14-star Michelin chef Pierre Gagnaire took on the role of culinary consultant for this project.
Tran Anh Hung received much praise from critics for skillfully exploiting the connection between love and cuisine, while also depicting the life of a young couple, addressing the themes of freedom, dedication and creativity. The work invested in the setting and props, creating a variety of parties. In his acceptance speech, after thanking Binoche and his team, Tran Anh Hung thanked his chef.
Director Pham Thien An won the Golden Camera award.
Besides Tran Anh Hung, another Vietnamese director who also received a prestigious award at the Cannes Film Festival is Pham Thien An. The film The Yellow Cocoon Shell (Inside the Golden Cocoon Shell) directed by him was awarded the Golden Camera for Best Debut Film.
