On January 23, in Moscow, the Russia-Vietnam Friendship Association solemnly celebrated the important event of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the Russian Federation.

Attending the ceremony and congratulating the Association's leadership were Vietnamese Ambassador to the Russian Federation Dang Minh Khoi and a number of heads of departments of the Embassy, Deputy Director of the Asian Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry Vadym Bublikov, former Russian Ambassador to Vietnam A. Tatarinov, Chairman of the Union of Vietnamese Associations in the Russian Federation Do Xuan Hoang, Chairman of the Association of Russian Veterans who worked in Vietnam Nikolai Kolesnik, many friends of Vietnam, and Russian students majoring in Vietnamese studies.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, President of the Russia-Vietnam Friendship Association, Professor, Doctor of Economics Vladimir Buianov recalled that 75 years ago, the Soviet Union and Vietnam created a strong boost for bilateral relations when they signed an agreement to establish diplomatic relations.

Since then, the two sides have developed relations in all fields: politics, economics, culture, society, military, humanity, education, science...

Russia-Vietnam relations received that momentum and the Russia-Vietnam Friendship Association, the successor of the Soviet-Vietnam Friendship Association, gathered a large number of people who shared the same desire for that relationship to develop further, achieve many positive results, and be sustainable in all conditions of the times.

Since President Ho Chi Minh, who studied in the Soviet Union in the 1920s and later initiated the establishment of the Soviet-Vietnamese Friendship Association in 1950, generations have come to study in the two countries, which is a valuable source of capital to day by day foster the closer Russia-Vietnam friendship, for the benefit of each nation and people.

Over the past 75 years, the affection, relationship, contact and exchange between the two peoples have always been maintained on the basis of respect, sincerity, friendliness, mutual benefit, inheriting and promoting all the fine traditions that previous generations have worked hard to cultivate.

Deputy Head of the 3rd Asian Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry Vadym Bublikov moved the entire hall by putting aside his prepared speech and expressing his sincere feelings “from the heart”.

He emotionally pointed out that perhaps in the world there are few two countries or two peoples that, though geographically distant, different in culture, language, religion... are as close as Vietnam and Russia.

The fine tradition of that relationship began during the extremely difficult years of war, during the great and valuable help that the Vietnamese people received from their Soviet brothers and thanks to which they achieved final victory.

In the modern period, the two countries have developed multifaceted and multi-field relations. Although there are still many difficulties and many results have not been as expected, both sides always strive to find measures to strengthen relations, increase annual trade turnover, and oil and gas cooperation has been very successful. Every year, hundreds of Vietnamese students receive scholarships to study at universities in the Russian Federation.

According to the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Vietnam is currently in a period of rising up with all economic sectors actively developing. Vietnam's position and weight are being enhanced in relation to Russia and that further promotes cooperation between the two countries.

In response, Ambassador Dang Minh Khoi emphasized that the foundation of the Vietnam-Russian Federation relationship was built long before the 75-year milestone, when the first President of Vietnam, then a young man seeking a way to save the country, Nguyen Ai Quoc, first came to Petrograd, to the Soviet Union to study "the light of Lenin, of the October Revolution" and later successfully led the August Revolution to liberate the entire Vietnamese people, giving birth to the country.

That relationship was nurtured by the many sacrifices of Vietnamese international communist soldiers who defended Moscow during the Great Patriotic War, and of Soviet military experts who "took the brunt of bombs and bullets" with the Vietnamese brothers in the struggle against foreign invaders and to unify the country.

In peacetime a comprehensive legal framework has been built for the development of bilateral cooperation, including the Treaty on the Fundamental Principles of Friendly Relations between Vietnam and Russia in 1994.

Vietnam and Russia became Strategic Partners in 2001 and upgraded relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2012.

So far, political relations have been continuously strengthened, mainly through regular delegation exchanges at all levels, especially high-level.

Positive moves were recorded in military cooperation, cooperation in the field of security, in the fields of economy and trade, science and technology, education, culture, tourism, as well as in inter-regional cooperation.

Ambassador Dang Minh Khoi especially emphasized that the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Russia is characterized not only by high political trust between the two countries' senior leaders but also by the close relationship between the two peoples, between the most ordinary people.

The Vietnamese people always keep in mind their deep gratitude to the Soviet Union, now the Russian Federation, for their sincere, great and extremely valuable fraternal help and support during the difficult years of the struggle for independence, liberation and reunification of South Vietnam, as well as in the cause of national construction, development and defense, both materially and spiritually.

At the ceremony, the Association's leaders screened a clip about 10 outstanding events of Vietnam in 2024, selected by the Vietnam News Agency. Vice President of the Association Petr Tsvetov introduced each event as a fairly complete picture of a Southeast Asian country that is changing and prospering every day.

It is gratifying to see that the tradition is being continued firmly and effectively. At the ceremony appeared many young faces of future generations of Vietnamese studies.

Second-generation Vietnamologist Maxim Sunnerberg is a Doctor of History who teaches at the Institute of Asian and African Countries of the prestigious Moscow State University. With more than 20 years of experience teaching about Vietnam, he believes that Russia-Vietnam relations since their inception in the 19th century have become more diverse than ever.

And so, teaching and learning Vietnamese studies, in addition to career goals, is itself interesting, exciting, enriching to one's own life and therefore has a long-term development future.

MGIMO third-year Vietnamese Studies student Pavel could not hide his excitement after returning from a long internship in Vietnam. Pavel clearly felt the friendly feelings for Russian people, the country, culture and language everywhere he went in Vietnam.

With the observation of a future expert, Pavel gradually understood more deeply the Vietnamese character, open, friendly, willing to help, self-respecting and respectful of others. The safety and level of infrastructure in Vietnam really impressed Pavel.

The successes of 75 years of cooperation have created a solid foundation for the future.

At the three-quarter century milestone, the Vietnam-Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership is facing a new stage of development in step with the determination of the Asian country to step into the era of rising up, becoming a worthy partner of the world's great powers, and catching up, advancing together, and standing shoulder to shoulder with the great powers of the five continents.
