Ho Chi Minh City will build the Thu Thiem Theater worth nearly 2,000 billion VND, the most modern in the world.

HCMC - The Symphony, Music and Ballet Theater in the new urban area of Thu Thiem (abbreviated as Thu Thiem Theater) with a total investment of 2,000 billion VND will have the most modern design in the world , demonstrating its own unique value in performing arts, forming the cultural heritage of HCMC.

Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Phan Van Mai has just signed a document to send to relevant departments and agencies on the architectural design plan for the Thu Thiem theater project. Accordingly, Mr. Phan Van Mai assigned the Department of Culture and Sports to preside over and coordinate with the Management Board of Investment and Construction Projects for Civil and Industrial Works and relevant departments and agencies to urgently receive the opinions of the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee on May 24 on the architectural design of the project. In particular, continue to research, carefully analyze, and specifically evaluate the architectural design ideas of the theater, its functionality, artistic value, synchronization, harmony, and suitability with the landscape, aesthetics, and urban architectural space. Study some outstanding features of design plan S99 (cultural services, cultural products, cuisine...) to supplement and complete design plan D12, ensuring the architectural design plan to build a modern, multi-functional theater with many types of performing arts (Opera, symphony, ballet, reformed opera, seminars, exchanges, tourism...). The design of the stage for performances must meet the requirements of the most modern stage in the world, demonstrating the unique value of performing arts, forming the cultural heritage of Ho Chi Minh City. In addition, the architectural design plan must ensure the criteria of unique design, harmony in aesthetics, creating highlights in cultural, modern, scientific architectural design, harmony with traditional values, combining the construction of "Ho Chi Minh Cultural Space"; creating a deep perception of the cultural values of the project for each service object. At the same time, the design plan must fully demonstrate civilized, modern, affectionate, popular, and humane elements to widely serve all classes of people and tourists. Ho Chi Minh City requires that the preparation process for implementation steps must be carefully researched and considered, continuing to consult, listen, and absorb the maximum opinions of experts in performing arts, professionals in architectural and artistic design, symphony, ballet, and reformed opera artists, etc., combined with research and absorption of the art designs of famous theaters in other countries. This is to ensure the implementation of criteria on modern theater architectural ideas, scale, functionality, technical and aesthetic factors, sustainability of the project, durability of materials, area, and appropriate implementation costs. It is possible to study and call for social investment in a few items to build a theater commensurate with the stature of Ho Chi Minh City.

The Thu Thiem Theater Project was approved by the HCMC People's Council in October 2018, with a total investment of more than VND1,500 billion. The theater has a capacity of 1,700 seats, including a large auditorium with 1,200 seats and a small auditorium with 500 seats. The theater is located on a plot of land with the symbol 1-21 (on the side of Ba Son Bridge), covering an area of 10,030 square meters. The project is expected to be completed in 2022, but due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and difficult budget conditions, HCMC has not been able to allocate capital for construction investment in 2021 and 2022. By 2023, the project will be allocated VND1.6 billion for the HCMC Project Management Board for Investment and Construction of Civil and Industrial Works (investor) to reward winning design units. The Thu Thiem Theater architectural design idea contest did not have a first prize, the organizing committee awarded two second prizes to the consortium. The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has established and identified a list of urgent projects that need to be implemented soon using the excess revenue from the 2022 budget and reinvested under a special mechanism, including the Thu Thiem Theater project. To date, the total investment of the project has increased to nearly VND 2,000 billion. Currently, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has assigned the Department of Culture and Sports to prepare a pre-feasibility study report to adjust the project to implement the next steps. The Thu Thiem Theater was chosen as a landmark project to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 2025).
