Ho Chi Minh City: Agriculture continues to increase the rate of high-tech application

Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Vo Van Hoan said that in the coming time, the city will continue to increase the rate of application of high technology and biotechnology in agricultural production; strive to develop high-tech agriculture and biotechnology to an advanced level, so that Ho Chi Minh City becomes one of the leading cities in Asia in high-tech agriculture and biotechnology.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ho Chi Minh City, currently, the agricultural sector accounts for a low proportion of GRDP, while the trend of agricultural land is decreasing. In 2023, the GRDP of the entire agricultural sector of the city will increase by 1.53%; the average production value of agricultural production is estimated at 579 million VND/ha, an increase of 1.57%... However, in the future, the agricultural sector will still play a very important role in the socio-economic development of the city.

In addition to creating jobs and stable income for the workforce, the agricultural sector is also a place to provide essential fresh agricultural and aquatic products such as vegetables, flowers, ornamental plants, meat, eggs, milk and aquatic products for the inner city area, more importantly, to research, produce and supply new high-quality varieties, advanced and modern techniques and technologies for the city and localities in the country and internationally; create green spaces to serve the needs of rest, sightseeing, study, recreation, entertainment of city residents and tourists, especially those in the inner city area; maintain ecological balance and minimize negative impacts caused by urbanization and climate change.

In recent times, the agricultural sector of Ho Chi Minh City has seen the emergence of many urban agricultural production models with high economic efficiency. Typical key agricultural products with higher profits of city farmers include leafy vegetables (malabar spinach, sweet cabbage, green cabbage, water spinach...) with a profit of about 805 million VND/year/ha, vegetables and fruits (cucumber, bitter melon, squash, green pumpkin...) with a profit of about 365 million VND/year/ha, Mokara orchid production with a profit of about 126 million VND/1,000m2/5 years, Dendrobium orchid production with a profit of about 122 million VND/1,000m2/year, dairy farming with a profit of 103 million VND/household/year, brackish water shrimp (intensive shrimp farming model applying high technology) with an average profit of 1,081 million VND/ha/year...

Mr. Dinh Minh Hiep, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that in 2024, the city's agricultural sector will focus on developing smart, circular, internationally integrated agriculture, adapting to climate change, increasing added value and sustainable development associated with building a prosperous and civilized new countryside. Strive to build agriculture in the direction of "Ecological agriculture, modern countryside, civilized farmers". Agriculture will develop rapidly and sustainably in the direction of ecological agriculture, applying high technology and biotechnology, becoming a center for producing plant varieties and livestock breeds with high productivity, quality and added value, firmly ensuring food security in the region.
