Ho Chi Minh City: Admission to public grade 10 will take place in two phases, a new point compared to previous years.
The public 10th grade enrollment plan was approved by the City People's Committee on the afternoon of March 18.
Accordingly, junior high school graduates (except those in Thanh An island commune) must take an exam in three subjects: Math, Literature, and English to get the results for admission to grade 10. Math and Literature have a test time of 120 minutes, Foreign Language 90 minutes. Candidates taking the exam for specialized or integrated grade 10 will take an additional specialized or integrated subject test in 150 minutes. The exam is scheduled to be held on June 6-7.
The admission process has two phases. In phase 1, students register 3 options to take the entrance exam to public high schools. Candidates who want to take the entrance exam to specialized schools can register 3 more specialized options.
In phase 2, depending on the admission situation, the Department will decide to organize additional admissions. This is to ensure the rights of candidates with high scores but not admitted, while some schools do not have enough enrollment quotas.
The admission score is the sum of the three exam scores and the priority score (if any). The principle is that the standard score for the second choice is not lower than the first choice, and the third choice is not lower than the second choice. In some cases, the standard score between the three choices can be equal, depending on the number of candidates registering for each choice.
For candidates applying to specialized schools, the admission score is the total score of three regular exams plus the specialized subject score multiplied by a coefficient of two and the priority score (if any).
This year, for the first time, students in Thanh An island commune are being considered for admission to grade 10 at public schools in Can Gio district instead of taking an entrance exam. The Department of Education and Training said this was a proposal from the People's Committee of Can Gio district with the goal of ensuring education for students living in the difficult island commune.

In 2023, nearly 96,000 candidates took the 10th grade public entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City, about 77,300 students passed (80%). However, nearly 5,000 students did not enroll.
The main reason is said to be that many candidates live in the city center but register for schools in the suburbs and cannot attend because they are far from home. Ho Chi Minh City then recruited more but still had nearly 2,000 vacant spots.
