Ho Chi Minh City: The enrollment process for 10th grade in public schools will take place in two stages, a new feature compared to previous years.
The plan for admission to public high schools was approved by the City People's Committee on the afternoon of March 18th.
Accordingly, junior high school graduates (except those from Thạnh An island commune) must take an exam in three subjects: Mathematics, Literature, and English, to obtain results for admission to grade 10. Mathematics and Literature exams have a time limit of 120 minutes, while the English exam is 90 minutes. Candidates applying to specialized or integrated grade 10 classes will take an additional specialized or integrated subject exam lasting 150 minutes. The exam is scheduled to be held on June 6-7.
The admissions process has two stages. In stage 1, students register for 3 preferences to take the entrance exam for public high schools. Candidates who wish to take the exam for specialized schools can register for 3 additional specialized school preferences.
In Phase 2, depending on the enrollment situation, the Department will decide to organize supplementary admissions. This aims to ensure the rights of high-scoring candidates who were not admitted, while some schools may not have filled their quotas.
The admission score is the sum of the scores from the three exams and any priority points (if applicable). The principle is that the cutoff score for the second choice cannot be lower than the first choice, and the cutoff score for the third choice cannot be lower than the cutoff score for the second choice. In some cases, the cutoff scores for all three choices may be equal, depending on the number of applicants for each choice.
For candidates applying to specialized schools, the admission score is the sum of the scores from the three regular exams plus the score for the specialized subject multiplied by a factor of two, and any priority points (if applicable).
This year, for the first time, students in Thanh An island commune will be admitted to 10th grade in public schools in Can Gio district through a selection process instead of an entrance exam. The Department of Education and Training stated that this was a proposal from the People's Committee of Can Gio district, aiming to ensure education for students living in this disadvantaged island commune.

In 2023, nearly 96,000 candidates took the entrance exam for 10th grade in public schools in Ho Chi Minh City, with approximately 77,300 passing (80%). However, nearly 5,000 students did not enroll.
The main reason is believed to be that many candidates who live in the city center registered for schools in suburban areas, making it impossible for them to attend due to the distance from home. Ho Chi Minh City subsequently recruited additional students, but nearly 2,000 spots remained vacant.
