Joy of Liberation Day
For every citizen of Hai Duong city, the day of the city's liberation is deeply engraved in their hearts, especially for those who participated and witnessed that historic moment.
As a pre-uprising cadre, Mr. Le Xuan Tho in Zone 2, Tran Hung Dao Ward (Hai Duong City) turns 100 this year, nearly 80 years of Party membership. Although he is at a rare age, many events have been forgotten, but in Mr. Tho's mind, October 30, 1954 is forever engraved.
Mr. Tho still remembers that in 1950, while he was participating in revolutionary activities, he was captured by the enemy and taken to Con Dao prison. After nearly 4 years of being detained by the enemy, in September 1954, Mr. Tho was released and returned to perform his duties in Binh Giang district. When he received the notice to prepare to enter Hai Duong town with the group, Mr. Tho was very emotional.
He recounted that on the morning of October 30, 1954, he and his group headed to Hai Duong town. Along the way, the red flag with a yellow star fluttered. On both sides of the road, every house hung the national flag, and people held the national flag and waved it to the troops. “The red flag with a yellow star fluttered all over the streets and corners of the town that day. Those were sacred, precious moments that I will never forget,” Mr. Tho said emotionally.
These days, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Ho, born in 1933 in Mac Hien Tich street, Hai Tan ward (Hai Duong city), regularly reads news about activities celebrating the 220th anniversary of the founding of Thanh Dong (1804 - 2024), and the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Hai Duong city (October 30, 1954 - October 30, 2024).
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Ho was one of the soldiers of Regiment 42 who followed Highway 5 and Highway 17 to take over and liberate Hai Duong town on the morning of October 30, 1954. Mr. Ho recalled that wartime soldiers like him at that time shared the spirit of "Determination to die for the Fatherland, determination to live" and determined that when participating in the resistance war, "either the grass is green or the chest is red" before returning.
"When I received the news that we were advancing with the army to take over the town, I felt no greater joy than that moment! At that time, I was a soldier in the liberation army. We entered the town with a proud attitude, with rifles on our shoulders and military backpacks, and our hearts were filled with joy," Mr. Ho recalled.
Building livable cities
After the liberation day, Hai Duong town entered a period of economic recovery and development. With a new position and new opportunities, the city was given more strength to step forward and develop continuously.
Hai Duong City has been upgraded to urban status three times and is now one of more than 20 type I cities in the country. Hai Duong City has transformed itself dramatically, becoming a dynamically developing city, a city with relatively synchronous infrastructure and rich cultural identity.
When it was first recognized as a city in 1997, the industrial production value of Hai Duong City was only 200 billion VND, but now it has reached over 120,000 billion VND; the agricultural production value was only 63 billion VND, but now it has reached 1,400 billion VND. In recent years, the city has had an economic growth rate of over 14%, with the structure shifting rapidly towards increasing the proportion of services and industry. The average income per capita in 1997 was 2.9 million VND/person/year, but now it has reached 80 million VND/person/year, nearly 28 times higher.
Hai Duong province is striving to become a modern industrial province by 2030, meeting some basic criteria of a centrally-run city; and by 2050 becoming a centrally-run city. In which, Hai Duong city is determined to be a core urban area, a central urban area, ensuring connectivity and promoting development between urban areas in the province with the Hanoi capital region and the Red River Delta region.
The 23rd Hai Duong City Party Congress set a goal of striving for Hai Duong City to basically become a green, smart, friendly and safe urban area by 2030.
Comrade Le Dinh Long, Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Secretary of the Hai Duong City Party Committee, said that Hai Duong City always determines that serving people is the highest goal of all activities. The city's socio-economic development is in a sustainable direction, in which the city prioritizes attracting supporting industry projects, projects with high added value, large scale, new technology, and environmental friendliness.
Hai Duong City will also focus on administrative reform, creating a favorable investment environment. Focus on mobilizing all resources to invest in building infrastructure systems and urban beautification. Gradually build urban government, e-government towards digital government to serve the people and businesses with the biggest goal of improving the quality of life for the people and building Hai Duong City as a livable city.
According to the history of the Hai Duong City Party Committee, on October 27, the Military Committee led by comrade Nguyen Nhu Thiet entered the town to receive the handover from the enemy. On October 28, the Civil Guard entered the town first. On the afternoon of October 29, the two sides signed the handover minutes.
At 5:00 a.m. on October 30, 1954, Regiment 42 and a provincial battalion entered Hai Duong town along Highway 5 and Highway 17. At 6:30 a.m. on the same day, our troops entered along Highway 17 to receive the handover at guard stations and offices. In the afternoon of the same day, our troops, in uniform and with guns, solemnly marched to Bao Dai flower garden (now Independence Square) to hold a rally to celebrate the complete liberation of Hai Duong town.
