“We need a very clear and understandable signal at the NATO summit in Vilnius that Ukraine can become an equal member of NATO after the conflict,” President Zelensky told reporters in Kiev alongside Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

In addition, Mr. Zelensky also said: "The invitation to join the alliance is the first step, very practical, it is very important for us."

The NATO summit is scheduled to take place in July 2023 in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius. This is considered the time when NATO heads of state will have to make important decisions, including the status that this military alliance will give to Ukraine and the admission of Sweden as a member.

President Volodymyr Zelensky will personally travel to Vilnius for the NATO summit only if Ukraine achieves positive results, Ihor Zhovkva, deputy head of the presidential administration and Zelenskyy's foreign affairs adviser, said in an interview with Reuters .

According to Ihor Zhovkva, Kiev's application to join NATO is "on the table" of the alliance members and the answer to it implies "an invitation to become a member".
