According to Yonhap news agency, President Yoon Suk-yeol will not cooperate with any further questioning requests from investigators related to allegations of rebellion and abuse of power following Yoon's decision to impose martial law in early December 2024.
Mr. Yoon's lawyers said he would not appear for questioning requested by the Corruption Investigation Office of Senior Officials (CIO), scheduled for the afternoon of January 16.
"Mr. Yoon is not in good health and he has nothing more to say after the questioning the other day," Yoon Kap-keun, one of Mr. Yoon's lawyers, told Yonhap news agency.
Mr. Yoon was arrested at his residence in Seoul on the morning of January 15 and then taken to the CIO headquarters. During two interrogation sessions that lasted until 9:40 p.m. that same day, Mr. Yoon exercised his right to remain silent.
CIO investigators planned to continue questioning Mr. Yoon at 2 p.m. Thursday and skipped the morning session because lawyers said Mr. Yoon's health condition was not good.
However, the lawyers later said that Mr. Yoon would also not attend the afternoon questioning session.
After the first day of questioning, President Yoon Suk-yeol was taken to the Seoul Detention Center in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province.
On January 15, Mr. Yoon became the first sitting president of South Korea to be arrested for investigation on charges of rebellion following his martial law order on December 3, 2024.
After detaining Mr. Yoon, South Korean investigators have 48 hours to decide whether to apply for a separate formal arrest warrant.
To detain Mr. Yoon for further questioning, the CIO will need to apply for another arrest warrant on the morning of January 17, this Friday.
