On the afternoon of September 8, President of the Republic of Mozambique Filipe Jacinto Nyusi and his wife arrived in Hanoi, beginning an official visit to Vietnam from September 8-10 at the invitation of General Secretary and President To Lam and his wife.
This is President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi's first visit to Vietnam since taking office and the first visit to Vietnam by a Mozambican President in more than 17 years.
Welcoming the President of Mozambique and his wife at Noi Bai International Airport were Head of the Office of the President Le Khanh Hai, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Hang, Vietnamese Ambassador to Mozambique Pham Hoang Kim and leaders of several departments and offices of the Office of the President and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi was born on February 9, 1959, in Namua, Mueda District, Cabo Delgado Province, Republic of Mozambique. He speaks Portuguese and English.
Mr. Filipe Jacinto Nyusi has a bachelor's degree in advanced management from Victoria University of Manchester, UK; a master's degree in mechatronics from VAAZ de Brno Military Academy, Czech Republic; and has participated in many management training courses in the US, South Africa, and India.
Regarding his political career, in 1973, Mr. Filipe Jacinto Nyusi joined the FRELIMO Party in Nachingwea Center, Tanzania. He has held the following positions: Executive Director of the Northern Mozambique Railway Company (1995-2005); Executive Director, Port-Railway Corporation (2007-2008); elected as a member of the FRELIMO Party Central Committee (September 2012); Minister of Defense (March 2008 - March 2014); elected by the FRELIMO Party Central Committee as the party's candidate for President in the October 2014 general election (March 1, 2014); won the presidential election (October 15, 2014); took office as President for the first 5-year term (January 15, 2015); Elected as President of the FRELIMO Party (March 29, 2015); Re-elected as President (October 15, 2019); Inaugurated for the second term as President (January 2020-present); Re-elected as President of the FRELIMO Party (October 2022-present).
President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi's official visit to Vietnam takes place in the context of the two countries celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations (1975-2025), a milestone marking the good development of bilateral relations.
It is expected that during the visit, President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi will meet and hold talks with senior leaders of Vietnam, visit and work with a number of prominent businesses, educational, cultural and historical institutions.
The two sides also signed a number of important cooperation documents in areas where both sides have needs, potential and strengths.
Vietnam and Mozambique established diplomatic relations on June 25, 1975.
Immediately after establishing diplomatic relations, Vietnam opened an embassy in Mozambique in 1976. This demonstrates the importance and desire to develop traditional friendship with Mozambique in particular and with African friends in general.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said Vietnam and Mozambique have a traditional friendship and maintain good relations through Party and State channels; regularly exchange delegations and high-level contacts; and actively coordinate and support each other at multilateral international forums.
In 2023, bilateral trade turnover reached 546.4 million USD, of which Vietnam exported 127 million USD, mainly rice, fertilizers, and diversified goods, and imported 419.4 million USD, mainly coal of all kinds (346 million USD) and cashew nuts (59 million USD).
Viettel launched a mobile network in Mozambique under the brand name Movitel (a joint venture between Viettel and SPI company in which Viettel holds 70% of shares) in May 2012 with a total investment of over 600 million USD.
Since the beginning of 2024, Movitel has been the telecommunications and information technology multi-service provider with the largest market share in Mozambique and is among the top 3 companies contributing the most to the budget in Mozambique.
In agriculture, from 2010 to 2014, Vietnam, Japan and Mozambique implemented a tripartite agricultural project within the framework of South-South cooperation in two key agricultural regions of Mozambique, Gaza and Zambezia provinces.
Currently, the Vietnamese community in Mozambique has about 200 people, mainly Vietnamese officials and employees working at the Movitel telecommunications joint venture, the rest are education and health experts.
