President Joe Biden has delivered his first speech at the White House since Trump was projected to win the election this year. Earlier, Vice President Kamala Harris conceded defeat on November 6 and congratulated Trump on his victory.
Mr Biden said the American people deserved a “peaceful and orderly” transition following Mr Trump’s victory.
“For over 200 years, America has been conducting the greatest experiment in self-government in the history of the world. That’s not hyperbole. That’s the truth. Where the people vote and choose their own leaders, and they do it peacefully. And we’re in a democracy. The will of the people always prevails,” he stressed.
“Yesterday, I spoke with President-elect Trump to congratulate him on his victory, and I assured him that I will direct my entire administration to work with his team to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition. That is what the American people deserve,” Biden added.
Mr. Biden also praised Vice President Harris, the Democratic candidate, for showing her genuine nature in her speech after losing to Mr. Trump.
“She had an inspirational campaign and everyone saw what I respect about her, which is her character. She has a great personality and is genuine,” he stressed.
Mr Biden told Americans he understood there would be mixed feelings about the election results, but it was important to “accept the choice the country has made”.
“I know for some, this is a moment of victory. For others, this is a moment of loss. Campaigns are a race of competing visions. The country chooses one path or the other, and we accept the choice the country has made,” Biden said.
“You can’t love your country just because you won. You can’t love your neighbor just because you agree with them. One thing I think you can do regardless of who you voted for is to see each other not as competitors but as fellow Americans,” he stressed.
President Biden also sought to soothe voters dismayed by the election results.
“Failure in life is inevitable, but never give up. We all fail, but the measure of our character, as my father used to say, is how quickly we get back up,” he stressed.
“Remember, defeat does not mean defeat. We have lost this battle. The America of your dreams is calling to you. The American spirit endures,” he affirmed.
Mr. Biden pledged to continue his efforts to complete his presidential term and called on Americans to continue moving forward.
“Together, we have changed America for the better. Now, we have 74 days left to finish our term, our term. Let’s make each day count. That is our responsibility to the American people,” he said.
“I know these are tough times. You’re grieving. I hear you and I understand you, but don’t forget, don’t forget all that we’ve accomplished. This has been a historic presidency, not because of me as president, but because of what we’ve done, what you’ve done,” Biden said.
He once again stressed the “integrity of the US electoral system”, stressing that it is honest, fair and transparent.
