On July 23, Dr. Nguyen Tu Dung, Director of JW Hospital, said that at the time of admission on the evening of July 21, the infection appeared on both sides of the patient's buttocks, localized and invading the surrounding area, even invading the posterior buttocks. The patient's buttocks were swollen, with many lumpy areas. The stitches from previous filler curettage were still leaking pus.
"Losing money and getting sick" due to self-injecting filler into the buttocks
Ms. T. said she spent more than 100 million VND to ask relatives to buy 700cc of "European filler" to inject into her buttocks, creating a sexy peach buttocks instead of having to go to a large cosmetic hospital to do it.
She had filler injected into her buttocks twice. The first time, she injected 300cc of "European" filler into her buttocks at the home of an acquaintance (not a doctor or medical staff). Nine months later, Ms. T. went to her acquaintance's house again to inject another 400cc of the same filler into her buttocks, hoping to make her peachy buttocks rounder.
Just 3 days later, Ms. T. had a high fever, her buttocks suddenly swelled and she was in severe pain. Unable to hold on for 10 consecutive days, Ms. T. went to an emergency medical station to have the abscess drained.
However, a few months later, the abscess continued to recur, causing continuous pain for many days, so Ms. T. decided to go to a beauty salon in Ho Chi Minh City for treatment. Here, Ms. T. was advised to have the abscess removed and a buttock implant placed to reconstruct her buttocks for 70 million VND.
"I was tortured for 3 months because my buttocks were painful and swollen and I could only lie on my stomach. So after an acquaintance introduced me to a famous cosmetic master in Ho Chi Minh City who could help me treat and restore my buttocks by inserting a buttock implant, I decided to transfer 70 million VND to that doctor as a deposit," Ms. T recounted.
After many messages urging the doctor to perform surgery on her, the doctor finally made an appointment for her to come to the clinic for surgery.
Here, Ms. T. had three 15cm incisions made on both sides of her buttocks to drain the pus. The total cost Ms. T. had to pay this doctor was 70 million VND to treat the abscess and place a buttock implant. However, Ms. T. was not given a buttock implant and the most serious thing was that the buttock abscess had not completely healed and was still in constant pain.
Nearly 1000cc of filler, pus, necrotic tissue and many unidentified impurities were sucked out of the patient.
Necrotic buttocks, erosion to the femur and sacrum
After searching for information on the internet, Ms. T. went to JW Hospital for examination. Through medical history and MRI diagnosis, Dr. Tu Dung said that the infection appeared on both sides of the patient's buttocks, localized and invaded the surrounding area, even invading the posterior buttocks. Although the patient had had the abscess removed twice, because the filler had penetrated deep into the muscle tissue everywhere, there were still filler remnants inside the buttocks, causing the current buttocks to swell, with many lumpy and concave areas. The stitches from the previous filler removals were still leaking pus.
Immediately, Dr. Tu Dung ordered the team to perform emergency surgery to prevent the filler from spreading further or blocking blood vessels. At that point, the condition would become more serious and difficult to save.
For 3 hours, the team performed filler curettage surgery to save the patient's buttocks. The surgery encountered many challenges because the filler seemed to be located everywhere in the buttocks, forming a honeycomb structure that was extremely difficult to cure, reaching all the way to the femur and sacrum, forcing the team to perform each area to cure the entire abscess. Blood and pus continuously gushed out.
During the emergency treatment, the team collected nearly 1000cc of filler, pus, necrotic tissue and many unidentified impurities. The patient will be actively treated with intravenous antibiotics and a specialized VAC machine will be placed to drain the fluid and necrotic tissue for 7-10 days to completely resolve the abscess.
Don't be disabled because of filler injections for beauty
"Underground cosmetic surgery" activities are becoming increasingly sophisticated and chaotic. Ho Chi Minh City has more than 7,000 establishments providing cosmetic services. However, only nearly 600 establishments are licensed by the Ministry and the Department of Health, accounting for less than 15%. The remaining 85% are granted business registration certificates by districts, towns, and Thu Duc City. Director of the Department of Health Tang Chi Thuong said this at the discussion session on socio-economic issues at the 10th session of the 10th term City People's Council on the afternoon of July 11.
Recently, there have been many cases of tragic complications due to filler injections for beauty purposes. At the end of June, a woman died after breast filler injections in District 10 (HCMC) and recently a 21-year-old man had a feng shui filler injection for nose augmentation at a sticky rice and bread shop in HCMC and then experienced headaches, vomiting, pain in his right eye, and blurred vision.
Dr. Dung said that filler is essentially hyaluronic acid, a filler used in beauty. However, when injecting filler, it is extremely important to inject the right type of licensed quality filler and not inject too much. The Ministry of Health stipulates that the person injecting the filler must be a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon, with formal training. The facility performing the procedure must also be licensed and certified. In particular, filler should absolutely not be injected for breast augmentation or buttock augmentation because it can cause many heartbreaking situations. Priority should be given to choosing safer methods such as fat grafting or implant placement.
"Never before has the number of patients with necrosis due to filler injections at illegal cosmetic facilities been as high as it is now. In a short period of time, JW Hospital has continuously treated many patients with complications after filler injections for beauty purposes, this number has increased to an alarming level," shared Dr. Nguyen Phan Tu Dung.
