The General University Building, formerly the Indochina University, opened its doors to visitors for the first time with creative art exhibitions.
The interactive art exhibition complex "Indochina Senses" at the University Building, 19 Le Thanh Tong, taking place from November 9 to 17, is an event that helps visitors visit for the first time a nearly 100-year-old building with 22 creative works of art. The exhibition is part of the Hanoi Creative Design Festival 2024.
The main hall of the building, with its dome and tall decorative columns, is the space to welcome visitors. The artists created arched glass panels on the doors overlooking the main street, both providing light and creating the feeling of a giant stained glass painting, inspired by the image of light bulbs symbolizing the light of knowledge.

Portraits of painter Victor Tardieu - the first principal who founded the Indochina College of Fine Arts and painter To Ngoc Van - the first Vietnamese principal of the school, made by sculptor Tran Quoc Thinh, are placed in the main hall.
Visitors will take a small staircase to the 5th floor of the building, where they can see the dome of the main hall. Here, there are decorative works including chandeliers by architect Le Phuoc Anh; an installation of doctoral steles on light-conducting mica, engraved, inspired by the decorative design project of the Indochina University building by architect Ernest Hebrard.
Despite nearly 100 years, the ceiling of the building still has the image of two phoenixes, a symbol of power in East Asian culture. Here, artist Pham Trung Hung re-painted two phoenixes that have peeled and faded over time using 3D mapping projection technology.

In the Nguy Nhu Kon Tum hall on the left of the main hall is the installation work, video concert Dai Tuong 2 - Son Ha Dien Nghia by visual artists. Also in this room is the installation work of the oil painting Thang Duong Nhap That, created from original black and white photos processed through digital technology, combining video art and moving images.
Along the floors are sculptures, terracotta, especially the arrangement of retrospective research books on Indochina fine art motifs, and photographic works on Indochina architecture.
Outside the building is the Letters – Sciences – Arts work, inspired by the philosophy and orientation of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary training of the former Indochina University. Many locations in the campus, hallways, and lobby of the building are stainless steel mirror sculptures of painter Victor Tardieu and architect Ernest Hebrard.
According to artist Nguyen The Son, lecturer at the School of Interdisciplinary Sciences and Arts, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the works at the exhibition blend with the space, creating stories that honor creative art. The ideas are based on the foundation of history and Indochinese style, creating a popular trend in fine arts and architecture.
"The exhibition is a tribute to generations of teachers of the Indochina University who laid the foundation for artistic creation, fine arts, architecture and the continuation of contemporary generations as a way to continue history," said artist Son.

The Indochina University building was built in Hanoi in the Indochinese architectural style, designed by French architect Ernest Hébrard in 1924. Hanoi National University was established in 1956, taking over the buildings of Indochina University, which is now the location of the University of Natural Sciences - Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
In November 2013, the Hanoi People's Council included the project in the list of architectural works built before 1954 that need to focus resources on preserving and promoting cultural values.
