Join hands to fight child marriage

Child marriage - a never-ending "hot" story in Duc Co border district. Marriages at the age of "not yet full, not yet worried" have brought many sad stories about "child" fathers and mothers, leaving consequences for families and society.

In the border commune of Ia Pnôn, in 2023, there were 4 cases of child marriage. The main reason leading to this situation is the influence of backward customs such as: early marriage to have labor, difficult economic conditions, the impact of the negative side of social networks, new lifestyles... affecting the awareness of young people, causing the situation of dropping out of school and child marriage to still exist in ethnic minority areas.

In order to change people's thinking and ways of doing things as well as eliminate gender prejudices, customs and habits that are harmful to women and children, in 2023, the Triel and Bua village community communication team was established. The team has 20 members who are prestigious people in the community, have the skills to propagate and mobilize the masses to comply with the Party's policies and the State's laws on communication, prevention of early marriage and incestuous marriage, prevention of domestic violence... Through propaganda work, people have gained more knowledge, skills, awareness of self-protection, and prevention from temptations and social evils. Thereby, contributing to reducing early marriage, eliminating gender prejudices and stereotypes in families and communities.

Ms. Kpuih H'Da (Triel village, Ia Pnôn commune) said: I and the members of the Community Communication Team regularly take advantage of village and commune meetings to disseminate legal education to the people. In particular, we must eliminate bad customs such as lavish weddings and funerals that last for many days, early marriage and incestuous marriage... If we say it once, people may not listen, but if we say it many times and correctly, and if they feel satisfied, they will follow. Thanks to that, the number of cases of early marriage has gradually decreased, in 2024 there were only 2 cases of early marriage, no cases of incestuous marriage.

Eliminate gender stereotype barriers

In the Gia Rai family and community, women's voices have no "weight", they are not allowed to contribute opinions and participate in important village matters. Along with that, to have a source of "human resources" to work in the fields, women have to get married early, have many children... It is because of these backward concepts and gender prejudices that many girls cannot go to school; every family has many children... Hunger and poverty continue to surround the village.

To gradually eliminate gender prejudice in ethnic minority areas, especially to improve knowledge and economic ownership for women in the new era, the "Community Communication Team" of Tung village, Ia Nan commune has had good and creative ways of doing things through practical models and activities.

Ms. Kpuih H'Hoa, a member of the Tung Village Community Communications Team, shared: “I myself am an example for the villagers to see that hard work, growing rice and coffee trees for high productivity and economic benefits. When I make my own living, not depending on anyone, with progressive thinking, my voice will have value. First of all, I talk to my husband and children, then I guide the villagers to change the crop structure and develop the economy. At the same time, I actively participate in the campaigns "Building a family of 5 no's, 3 clean's", "Women help each other develop the economy, reduce poverty sustainably"... Thereby, helping women change their way of thinking and doing, confidently express themselves, eliminate barriers of gender prejudice and gender stereotypes, and build a more civilized life".

Duc Co district has 10 communes and towns with 73 hamlets, villages and residential groups, of which 45 are ethnic minority villages, with ethnic minorities accounting for more than 35% of the population. Therefore, the Community Communication Teams have promoted the role and responsibility of each prestigious member in the community to mobilize people to eliminate bad customs as well as barriers to gender equality and gender stereotypes, gradually changing the thinking and working style of ethnic minorities...
