“I am grateful for the excellent care I received at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and want to thank the outstanding physicians and nursing staff for their professionalism and excellent support,” said Austin.
He also expressed his gratitude for all the well wishes he received during his treatment.
Doctors at Walter Reed said the Pentagon chief had received tests and non-surgical care to address symptoms including leg pain and would not need further cancer treatment.
"Secretary Austin's prostate cancer was treated early and effectively, and his prognosis is excellent. He has no plans for further treatment for the cancer beyond regular follow-up after prostate surgery," the Pentagon said in a statement, citing doctors.
The Pentagon added that Mr. Austin will work remotely for a period of time before returning to work.
