On November 26, 2022, Li Tie, former head coach of the national men's football team, was investigated, revealing a major corruption case in the football world. Through such continuous negative behavior, Li Tie accumulated capital to seek the position of head coach of the national men's football team.
In August 2019, when he heard that CFA was about to establish a national men's football team to participate in the East Asia Cup, Li Tie felt that the opportunity had come. He said: " Because I really wanted to be the head coach of the national team, I thought of many ways, found many people to ask for help, found CFA leaders who could say good things and introduce me ."
Li Tie, former head coach of the Chinese men's football team.
This time, Li Tie used a double insurance method. On the one hand, he persuaded Zall Club to pay him to do his job, saying that if he could “get promoted”, he would repay the club in many ways. The club spent 2 million yuan (6.6 billion VND) to bribe Chen Tuoyuan. On the other hand, Li Tie felt that Liu Yi, the then Secretary General of CFA, also had an important voice, so he personally bribed Liu Yi with 1 million yuan (3.3 billion VND).
In this way, Li Tie became the head coach of the national men's football team as he wished. After Marcelo Lippi resigned, Li Tie was immediately appointed as the head coach of the national men's football team.
A day after it was confirmed that he had won the position, Li Tie flew to Wuhan to negotiate a deal with Zall Club.
“ In fact, it was a very naked exchange of interests and discussions,” said Tian Xudong, former chairman of Zall. “Which players I could bring in, how long they could play, and building good relationships at the Football Association level would help you with some resources. He gave us a lot of very attractive baits and asked us to give him money .”
Afterwards, Li Tie and Zall Club signed a so-called “contract” for a total of 60 million yuan, which was actually just a cover to cover up the nature of the transaction of exchanging rights for money. Afterwards, he quickly selected 4 players from Zall to be on the national team roster.
The 270 million yuan that Li Tie embezzled was taken abroad by his wife and she refused to return it. On January 14, 2024, Toutiao news site reported that after Li Tie was arrested for investigation, his wife, Long Fei, fled abroad with the 270 million yuan (about 890 billion VND) in evidence.
Li Tie was given the opportunity to call his wife many times to beg her to return to China to return the embezzled money, but she refused.
Chen Tuoyuan was elected as the 6th president of the Chinese Football Association on August 22, 2019. The night before his election, two heads of the local football association came to his house and each gave him 300,000 yuan (equivalent to 1 billion VND) in “introductory money”, asking him to “take care of them”. Before taking office, Chen Tuoyuan sensed the huge potential benefits of this circle and was willing to fall into it.
Tran Tuat Nguyen could not stop the "old rules", of course he could not stop the strong financial attack from the clubs. During his few years in power, he received tens of millions of yuan from many clubs.
Du Zhaocai (former Deputy Director General of the General Department of Sports and former Secretary of the CFA Party Committee) "relying on football to make a living", accepted tens of millions of yuan in bribes and allowed the chaos in football to go unchecked.
In 2022, there were clues reflecting suspicions of match-fixing and betting in some matches of the China League One. After receiving the relevant clues, the National Sports Administration asked Du Zhaocai to preside over the investigation and handling. However, he secretly swapped concepts and used the so-called "investigation and research" to deal with it.
On April 1, 2023, Du Zhaocai was disciplined and investigated by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission. On April 13, he was removed from his position as Deputy Director of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training. On October 7, he was expelled from the Party and civil servant positions for serious violations of discipline and the law.
On October 10, the Supreme People's Procuracy issued a decision to arrest Do Trieu Tai on suspicion of accepting bribes according to the law. According to the Chinese Football newspaper, the amount of bribes he received was more than 40 million yuan (132 billion VND).
To date, 14 figures in the Chinese sports community have been implicated in this major football corruption case, including: Liu Yi, former member of the Executive Committee and Secretary General of the CFA; Chen Yongliang, former Executive Deputy Secretary General of the CFA and former Director of the State Administration Bureau; Wang Xiaoping, former Director of the CFA Disciplinary Committee; Huang Song, former Head of the CFA Competition Committee: Yu Hongchen, President of the China Athletics Association (former Vice President of the CFA and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Chinese Super League); Dong Zheng, former General Director of the Chinese Super League: Liu Shuyi, former Vice President of the CFA: Ma Chengquan, former Director of the CFA Federation Committee; Tan Hai, former Director of the Technical Committee; Qi Jun, former Director of the CFA Strategic Planning Department; Liu Jun, former Chairman of the Chinese Super League Company under investigation.
