The Oscars are hanging by a thread, and the fallout from the "Emilia Pérez" film is especially telling at this moment—with just weeks to go until the most prestigious film awards ceremony. Every day brings a new joke, as a wounded entertainment elite—people who were simply trying to do the right thing and be accepted—now struggle to navigate the possibility that they may have all been involved in a massive farce.

In case you missed it, "Emilia Pérez" is a musical about a transgender Mexican drug lord. It was picked up by Netflix after its premiere in Cannes. Starring Karla Sofía Gascón, the film was nominated for numerous awards, with Gascón declaring at the Golden Globes: "The light always wins over the darkness... I am who I am, not who you want me to be."

But since then, through a search of her old tweets, it has been discovered that she has made a lot of problematic statements in the past. Muslims, George Floyd, Chinese people - they have all been criticized. But perhaps the worst thing she has done in the eyes of the community she is trying to impress - Hollywood - is criticize the Oscars.

"I didn't know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter protest, or 8M (Women's March)," Gascón said of the 2021 Academy Awards. "Other than that, it was an ugly, ugly gala."

Emilia Pérez has grossed $13.5 million (£11 million) on a $25 million budget (not including marketing) and has been a box office success. Netflix is hungry for awards, but Gascón's past social media post-mortem is likely to deter them.
