On the afternoon of April 4, Tien Hai District People's Committee held a conference to remove difficulties in combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Conference delegates.

By April 2024, in Tien Hai district, there were 254 fishing vessels registered on VnFishbase software with a length of 6m or more, of which 114 were offshore and coastal fishing vessels, and 140 were coastal fishing vessels. To overcome the shortcomings and limitations in combating IUU fishing pointed out by the agricultural sector, the district directed the District Land Fund Development Center and Industrial Cluster to develop and promulgate regulations on the operation of fishing ports, monitor seafood output in accordance with the process; assign and arrange staff to directly monitor output unloaded through the port, arrange ships to dock and leave the port; staff to monitor and collect fishing/purchasing logs; arrange and store scientific records to serve the work of tracing and monitoring seafood output unloaded through the port in the field to ensure compliance with regulations. The District Land Fund and Industrial Cluster Development Center organizes on-duty monitoring of fishing vessel activities through the voyage monitoring system (VMS), coordinates with specialized agencies to work with ship owners who violate the VMS disconnection to verify the cause, remind them, and sign a commitment not to repeat the incident.

However, in Tien Hai district, there are still some fishing vessels operating in the wrong area, losing VMS connection for more than 10 days, fishing vessels with expired or unregistered registration still operating at sea...

At the conference, delegates clarified the shortcomings and difficulties in combating IUU fishing.

At the conference, delegates clarified the shortcomings and difficulties in combating IUU fishing and proposed solutions to overcome them. To put an end to the situation of fishing vessels violating IUU fishing, in the coming time, Tien Hai district will direct relevant sectors, units, and communes with fishing vessels to guide fishermen to register, inspect, issue fishing licenses, food safety certificates, and urge fishing vessel owners to mark and draw license plates in accordance with regulations. Communes with fishing vessels will review, request, and mobilize owners of vessels that no longer have vessels in their management areas to transfer their names and deregister them to ensure local fishing vessel management.

By April 2024, Tien Hai district has 254 fishing vessels with a length of 6m or more.
